Fidelity Becomes First Financial Services Firm to Build Data Center in Nebraska Under Nebraska Advantage Tier 2 Plus
Fidelity Investments, one of the world’s largest providers of financial services, has selected the City of Papillion in Sarpy County as the site of its new data center location.
“Fidelity is pleased to be in Nebraska,” said Steve Scullen, President of Corporate Operations for Fidelity Investments. “The state is an extremely attractive market for data center expansion and we’d like to thank Governor Heineman and other state, regional and local officials for being so cooperative and such great partners throughout this process. We believe the site we’ve chosen will provide us with the flexibility to build to our specifications in a location that will accommodate our needs now and in the future.”
Upon completion, the state-of-the-art data center will employ approximately 30 to 35 associates.  Fidelity has committed to and expects to invest a minimum of $200 million to construct and outfit the data center. Fidelity will start construction immediately and expects the new facility to be operational in 2014. The design and construction of the facility will be in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and will be designed to attain LEED certification.
The company cited the state’s low power rates and central U.S. location as key factors in its decision to locate in Nebraska, as well as the array of available incentives.
Fidelity becomes the first firm to use the “Tier 2 Plus-Large Data Center” provision contained in the recently-amended Nebraska Advantage Act. During the 2012 Legislative session LB 1118 was passed creating an additional Tier 2 to the Nebraska Advantage incentives, providing benefits for large data center projects. www.fidelity.com

Bell Lumber & Pole Company Announces New Site
Bell Lumber & Pole Company (Bell) is pleased to announce the development of a new plant and logistics center in Western Nebraska. Bell, in cooperation with the State of Nebraska, the City of Sidney, the Village of Potter, and Cheyenne County has agreed to definitive terms to purchase and build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to service both existing and new customers.
After careful analysis of market, economic, and logistical factors on a national level, Bell strategically selected Western Nebraska. Bell is acquiring property from Adams Warehousing, LLC owned by Don Adams. Bell and Adams are co-developing the property and surrounding site to accommodate all rail and manufacturing requirements.
Tom Bell, President and Owner of Bell, shared, “We are very excited to build in Nebraska. The expertise and welcoming spirit of community leaders here have made the process and ultimate decision a clear choice. This Nebraska expansion will help us better serve our existing and new customers for another 100 years.”
Bell’s new facility will add more than 30 full-time jobs, plus dozens of other support- and contractor-related opportunities in the region.
A key factor in the site selection was the synergy between Adam’s and Bell’s respective businesses. The new facility is targeted to be operational in the summer of 2013.www.blpole.com

U.S. SBA Awards $566,300 STEP Funding to Nebraska DED
DED received a second round of funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration
(SBA) to support efforts to increase exporting by small businesses.
The State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) initiative, launched last year under the Small Business Jobs Act, is aimed at achieving two goals: 1) increase the number of small businesses that want to export, and 2) increase the value of exports for those small businesses that currently export.
DED applied for STEP funding and will manage the program for the State of Nebraska. DED plans to leverage the STEP program funds to help non-exporting small businesses enter international markets, as well as assist existing small business exporters expand their export efforts. The funds can also be used for international advertising, translation services for websites, literature, labeling and user manuals in the local language of their target markets, and third-party product testing to meet international certification or testing requirements, and a stipend to defray expenses related to attending U.S. or international export-focused trade shows and trade missions, international conferences, educational forums, and in-bound trade events such as hosting potential business partners from overseas for the purpose of training or equipment demonstrations.
Nebraska companies must qualify as a small business entity according to SBA’s North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) to be deemed eligible to apply for STEP Grant funding.
Eligibility requirements and the STEP Grant application are available at:www.neded.org/business/international-trade-and-investment.

Hildegard HZ_color2012-10-31 raising_courageous_kids

On Tuesday, November 13th, 7pm at the Lincoln High School Auditorium Hildegard Center

for the Arts will sponsor a free lecture event featuring guest speaker Dr. Charles Smith; a
highly respected Early Childhood Development Expert and Professor Emeritus in the School
of Family Studies and Human Services at Kansas State University. Dr. Smith’s presentation
will offer suggestions on how to help our children build strong character and learn to lead lives
of courage.  He will share insights from his book Raising Courageous Kids and offer wisdom
on character building that will greatly assist parents, educators and adults who work with and

love children.

“Sooner or later, no matter how much we want to protect them, our children will face adversity
when we cannot be there to help…life will demand that our children face fear, make choices
and take appropriate action.”—Dr. Smith

In addition to Dr. Smith's talk in the evening, Hildegard Center for the Arts has contracted with
Dr. Smith to conduct a workshop session with the children at the Clinton CLC on the afternoon
of the 13th.

Dr. Smith’s Book Raising Courageous Kids is currently available at Indigo Bridge Books located
in the Haymarket, 701 P Street.  Dr. Smith will sign books before and after his talk on November 13th.

Raising Courageous Kids is part of an exciting line up of projects and events (for the 2012-2013
school year) at Hildegard Center for the Arts called Heroes Among Us. Through the generous
corporate sponsorship of Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center and additional grant funding
from the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Hildegard Center
for the Arts is offering children in grades 6-12, ( at all public, private and homeschools within a 50
mile-radius of Lincoln) the opportunity to discover the “hero within” using writing, visual art and short
film creative experiences.  In addition, special “Heroes” workshops tailored for at-risk kids at People
City Mission, Lighthouse, Cedars Youth Services and Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach are currently
underway.  The recent Hearing from Heroes; a Theatrical Tour at Wyuka Cemetery was another
unique example of how Hildegard is generating creative educational experiences for heroes through
out the Lincoln community.

November 5 is the deadline for in person early voting at county election offices for registered voters.

-- The close of polls on November 6 is the deadline for the return of early voting ballots to county election offices, including ballots returned by mail.

"Don’t waste your ballot. Early voting in person or by mail should be done well ahead of deadlines to make sure your ballot gets cast and counted,” advised Gale.

“Early voting mail-in ballots have been shown to have as high as a 4% rejection rate when envelopes aren’t signed, or signed by someone else, or sent in a wrong envelope, or returned due to no postage.

So, follow the simple rules, get it done right, and make your ballot count. "

Lofte Theatre

"Whose Wives Are They Anyway?"

Find Out at the Lofte!

Take two company vice presidents and put them on a nice leisurely golf weekend.  Sprinkle in their wives who are out of town on a shopping excursion.  Combine with a new boss who insists on meeting the spouses.  Add a heaping handful of misunderstanding, desperation and top off with a man in a dress.  The result is the hilarious show, "Whose Wives Are They Anyway?" which opened at the Lofte Community Theatre in Manley on Saturday.

Written by the champion of American farce, Michael Parker and Directed by and starring Lofte Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert, "Whose Wives," is a PG-13 story of two men desperately trying to impress their new female boss.  Starring as the hapless "friend to the end" is Lincoln radio personality and Lofte veteran, Mick Kovar.  Playing the intimidating new boss is Melinda Mead of Plattsmouth.  Rounding out the cast is Brenna Jean Thompson of Lincoln, Shari Hoelker of Omaha, Roland Kelley of rural Otoe, Toni Santee of Plattsmouth and Rev. Dr. Renae Koehler of Firth.

The play runs November 1-4.  Tickets are $17 each.  Curtain times are 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday.  All Sunday performances are 2pm matinees.  Reservations for tickets can be made by calling the Lofte box office at 402.234.2553.
