FROM SECRETARY of STATE JOHN GALE

Early Voting Heats Up Across Nebraska

Lincoln -- County Election Offices across Nebraska are getting a lot of requests for early ballots.
In Nebraska's three largest counties: Lancaster, Sarpy and Douglas, foot traffic has also been
steady as people vote in-person.

"Over 17,000 Sarpy County voters have already requested an early ballot be sent to them or
have voted in the office," said Election Commissioner Wayne Bena. "This shatters all previous
records for this early in the election season."

Requests have also been heavy in Lancaster County, nearing the 20,000 mark. "Four years ago
we had a total of a little over 30,000 early vote ballots," explained Lancaster County Election
Commissioner Dave Shively. "I'm sure we will well exceed that number this year with just about
two weeks left to go."

In Douglas County, 3,676 people have voted in person. More than 54,774 requests have been
submitted for ballots and of those, more than 20,000 have been returned. County Election
Commissioner Dave Phipps said this already exceeds early voting requests and response
during the 2008 general election and he believes it will only grow in the weeks to come. "We
expect early voting to account for a fairly large percentage of the vote for this election. In 2008,
approximately 27% of all Douglas County voters voted early. This year, we expect that number
to be somewhere between 35% and 40% of the total vote," said Phipps.

Other counties are also experiencing something of a "boom" when it comes to early voting
requests. "I've got three computers going, and could literally use three more to process all the
requests we're receiving. We've been getting about 500 a day since it started," said Hall County
Election Commissioner Dale Baker.

The Lincoln County Election Commissioner said her office has also sent out 2,000 ballots since
early voting started on October 1. The first week was the busiest her office has ever had.

In reaction to the enormous response Secretary of State John Gale said, "A surge in early voting
signals a probable high turnout for our November 6 election. While convenience is a factor, early
voting shows people have been paying attention and are ready to vote.” He reminded those who
wish to cast their ballots early, there are deadlines approaching:

-- Registered voters can make requests until 4 p.m. October 31 for early voting ballots to be mailed.
November 5 is the deadline for in-person early voting at county election offices for registered voters.

-- The close of polls on November 6 is the deadline for the return of early voting ballots to county
election offices, including ballots returned by mail.

"Don’t waste your ballot. Early voting in person or by mail should be done well ahead of deadlines
to make sure your ballot gets cast and counted,” advised Gale.

“Early voting mail-in ballots have been shown to have as high as a 4% rejection rate when envelopes
aren’t signed, or signed by someone else, or sent in a wrong envelope, or returned due to no postage.
So, follow the simple rules, get it done right, and make your ballot count. "

Nebraska’s three largest counties also utilize drop boxes, to make early voting more convenient. In
Lancaster and Sarpy counties, they are located outside the Election Commission offices. Douglas
County has five. Three of those sites are at local libraries.

Phipps added that in Douglas County, early voting is popular, and continues to be even more so with
each passing election. "After people vote early once, they seem to be more likely to do so again in
the future. It's easy and convenient for voters who don't want to worry about problems such as a busy
work schedule, sick children, or being out of town on Election Day."

Requests for early voting ballots can be found on the Secretary of State's website
(www.sos.state.ne.gov).  Look under 'Elections' for 'Voter Forms'.

Lofte Theatre

"Whose Wives Are They Anyway?"

Find Out at the Lofte!

Take two company vice presidents and put them on a nice leisurely golf weekend.  Sprinkle in their wives who are out of town on a shopping excursion.  Combine with a new boss who insists on meeting the spouses.  Add a heaping handful of misunderstanding, desperation and top off with a man in a dress.  The result is the hilarious show, "Whose Wives Are They Anyway?" which opened at the Lofte Community Theatre in Manley on Saturday.

Written by the champion of American farce, Michael Parker and Directed by and starring Lofte Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert, "Whose Wives," is a PG-13 story of two men desperately trying to impress their new female boss.  Starring as the hapless "friend to the end" is Lincoln radio personality and Lofte veteran, Mick Kovar.  Playing the intimidating new boss is Melinda Mead of Plattsmouth.  Rounding out the cast is Brenna Jean Thompson of Lincoln, Shari Hoelker of Omaha, Roland Kelley of rural Otoe, Toni Santee of Plattsmouth and Rev. Dr. Renae Koehler of Firth.

The play runs October 26-28 and November 1-4.  Tickets are $17 each.  Curtain times are 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday.  All Sunday performances are 2pm matinees.  Reservations for tickets can be made by calling the Lofte box office at 402.234.2553.

REMINDERS of Deadlines for November Election

LINCOLN – Secretary of State John Gale outlined deadlines regarding voter registration and early voting for the Nov. 6 Nebraska general election.

Gale listed the following deadlines for the November election:

--Mail-in voter registrations were to have been postmarked by Oct. 19. Registrations closed at motor vehicle offices and state agencies on Oct. 19.

--In-person voter registration at county election offices ends at 6 p.m. Oct. 26. This includes registration changes such as updating an address.

--Registered voters can make requests until 4 p.m. Oct. 31 for early-voting ballots to be mailed. Nov. 5 is the deadline for in-person early voting at county election offices.

--The close of polls on Nov. 6 is the deadline for the return of early-voting ballots, including ballots returned by mail.

The secretary of state’s website (www.sos.ne.gov) provides detailed information regarding the voting process. The website includes a voter registration form, an application for an early-voting ballot, addresses and phone numbers for county election offices, and a look-up tool that allows voters to verify their registration status.

Gale reminded people to update their voter registration if they have moved within a county or submit a new registration if they have moved from one county to another.

Gale urged eligible Nebraskans to make sure they are registered to vote and then take the time to cast ballots. “Voting in Nebraska is a very user-friendly process,” he said.

People with voting questions can contact their county election office or the Secretary of State’s Office at (402) 471-2555.

Program Promotes Youth Workers for November Election

LINCOLN – Nebraska youth ages 14 to 18 are encouraged to participate as election workers for the Nov. 6 general election.

The Youth Election Service (YES), sponsored by Secretary of State John Gale and the Nebraska Bankers Association, is designed to increase interest and involvement in the election system among young people.

“We believe that YES is a valuable program that allows young people to serve our democracy, learn about the election system and provide important community service,” Gale said.

Participants are eligible to take part in drawings for 20 $50 savings bonds, which will be provided by the Nebraska Bankers Association. The drawings will be open to participants who worked in the May primary election or who work in the November general election, provided they performed a minimum of four hours of service.

In addition, all YES participants will receive a certificate of recognition from Gale.

Youths interested in serving as paid workers or volunteers for the November election should contact their county election offices as soon as possible.

For more information about the program, call Sharon Hambek (402) 471-6044 or sharon.hambek@nebraska.gov
