George W. Blessing

REPUBLICAN

Candidate for Fifth District Cass County Commissioner

Phone: (402) 235-2123 email:  river.j.rat@windstream.net

Hi, I'm George Blessing, a candidate for Cass County Fifth District Commissioner. My qualifications for this position are second to none.

My descendents settled in the Fifth District, southwest of Plattsmouth, in the mid 1860s. I’ve lived in Cass County for 70 years and in district five for 50 years. I’ve served on the 5-person Murray Village Board 35+ years, during which time I was instrumental in street-paving projects, the installation of a new water tower, building a new Village Hall, the beginnings of a curb and gutter project, building a new Young Memorial Park concession stand, joining Murray to the Beaver Lake waste-water treatment facility, updating the Young Memorial Park baseball field, and installing a new emergency warning siren. My wife Patricia and I have owned and operated a successful family business for more than 40 years in the Fifth District. We have two grown children, George IV and Angela. I am quite familiar with the people of the fifth district, understand their wants and needs, and know what it takes to get the job done. I would appreciate your vote May 15th,2012.

"OUTDOOR CLASSROOM"

 COMMUNITY PROJECT

Every few years, the Conestoga Elementary PTO focuses on a major project.  Our PTO was enlightened by research revealing the necessity of contact with nature for a healthy child.  We learned that time in nature inspires creativity, reduces stress, improves test scores, health concentration, behavior, reduces obesity, depression, attention deficit disorder while promoting humility and connection.  With the help of students, parents, staff and the community, our PTO has been raising and saving money for the past two years towards this community project.   We are now ready to break ground and are looking to the community to help fulfill our vision.  The following is a list of needed resources and volunteers:

  • help to remove broken concrete from the school/do you have a place we can put this concrete (not much)
  • pick-ups and drivers to haul and unload dirt, mulch and sand
  • donations of cut or fallen hardwood trees (oak, walnut, ash and hackberry preferred)  2' - 4' in diameter.  These trees will be used to line the entrance as well as provide natural seating, stepping stones and enclose areas.
  • help to plant trees, shrubs and flowers
  • donations of used tractor tires for a "hill of tires" planted in sand
  • brick pavers or cobblestone to be used as the floor to the entrance of the classroom
  • boulders - we will be building a bridge over a currently hazardous drainage area and would like to install boulders around it for kids to climb
  • construction experience or willingness to help build a stage area and bridge
  • framer - we are looking for a framer to help put up the facade of a school which will provide the backdrop to our stage.  We envision this to be wrapped in siding, so will also need siding installation experience.
  • concrete - we will be seeking bids for concrete to connect the areas within the classroom.  We are interested in part of this path being stamped with animal footprints.

  • Do you need help envisioning such a classroom?  Please visit the following site to view an outdoor classroom in South Omaha:  http://www.ops.org/elementary/gomezheritage/OutdoorClassroom/tabid/250/Default.aspx

If you have any of these items on your property and would be willing to donate them or if you are interested in donating your time and talent, we can make our dream come true!  If you would like to see the professional drawings of this classroom or to get involved, please contact Allison Welch at 402-235-2539 or email me at   allisonwelch@windstream.net

    Capitol Comments

April 27, 2012, Lincoln— I have now represented District 2 in a single-issue special legislative session and the traditional 60-day second session of Nebraska's One Hundred Second Legislature. The opportunity to serve our district and our state is everything I believed it would be – and more.

Listening and learning have been key elements of my legislative experience. I have listened toand learned from District 2 constituents, my colleagues and legislative staff, and Nebraska citizens who traveled to Lincoln from all parts of the state to testify at public hearings and visit the legislative chamber to watch their Unicameral at work. Each group of individuals contributed something special to the legislative process.

From my colleagues I learned that trust and respect are essential traits which are not automatically bestowed on any senator. They must be earned. I enjoyed getting to know the other 48 members of the legislature. I made efforts to learn what issues are important to each of them, and I have been told they trust me to be honest and straightforward with them. I know the relationships I built help me to represent District 2 in the legislature.

Legislative staff provided guidance as I learned about legislative procedures. The legislature operates under a formal set of rules. The rules are reviewed at the beginning of each session and are often revised by the body through a formal approval process. Much of the work of legislative divisions, such as the clerk's office, the fiscal office and the bill drafters, is determined by legislative rules. In order to work effectively in the legislature, it is imperative to learn to apply procedures that support each step in the legislative process. The learning curve is steep, but I have worked hard to learn from every new experience.

The citizens of District 2 have welcomed me as their state senator. I have been encouraged by the openness with which constituents contacted me to voice an opinion, ask a question about proposed legislation or request assistance from my office. I enjoyed the opportunity to host visitors from the district. Some people made appointments to discuss a particular issue with me. Others came to Lincoln as a group to study state government and tour the Capitol. Still others just stopped to say hello as they continued on to another destination. I learned something new about District 2 from each and every constituent contact.

Participating in the public hearing process and floor debate helped me to understand quite clearly what it means to be a state senator. Each senator represents the people in one legislative district, but, collectively, Nebraska's 49 state senators represent everyone who lives in this state. A state senator needs to learn about issues of importance beyond his or her own district, because most policy decisions must be made with the best interest of the entire state in mind. Several bills I introduced this year were prompted by constituent requests. For example, LB 1121 changed signature requirements for SID recall petitions; LB 1005 included members of state emergency response teams under the Volunteer Emergency Responders Job Protection Act; and LB 979 changed requirements for obtaining a pickle card license for a nonprofit organization that supports a volunteer fire company, first aid, rescue, ambulance or emergency squad. My fellow senators had to understand how these proposals would affect their districts and our state, before deciding to support them. LB 750, my 2012 priority bill, was introduced and passed to change a controversial assessment practice currently used in one county in our district. Great care was taken to craft the bill's provisions in a way that ensured the changes in one county would not produce unintended consequences in other parts of our state. My work on LB 750 drove home to me the fact that, while I work on behalf of District 2, I must always try to make decisions that are good for Nebraska.

Now that the legislative session is over, I will spend more time in the district. My office staff in Lincoln will always know how to reach me. My summer schedule includes constituent meetings, community celebrations and county fairs,. I hope to see you at one of these events.

I am always interested in hearing your comments by mail, phone or email.

    Violin-Fiddle

The Schoolhouse Performance Series will feature championship fiddler, Deborah Greenblatt, and multi-instrumentalist, David Seay performing "Fiddle Fables" on Sunday, May 13, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska.

With the help of her fabulous five-string fiddle, and some talented fiddle students, Deborah Greenblatt       explores some of the trials, tribulations, and lessons that fiddlers and other musicians often have in common. There is advice for the beginner ("It Starts With Your Feet"), advice for the fiddler's families ("Have Mercy"), for the growing fiddler ("Shopping For a Fiddle Blues"), for the brave fiddler ("I'm Gonna Fiddle In a Contest"), as well as the fiddler who plays the viola ("Out of Fiddle, Out of My Mind"). There are also inspiring stories of real-life fiddlers ("Cactus Pete"), teachers ("Alice Johnson' and students ("Mary Ann the Fiddler").

The concert will be followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers. Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students & seniors, and $1.00 for children.
