skunk 7

A mother skunk was always in a panic because she couldn't keep track of her two tiny ones. One was named 'Out' and the other named 'In'. When Out was in, In was out.

One day she saw Out but couldn't find In. She told Out to go out and bring In in.

In about twenty seconds, Out brought In in. Surprised, the mother skunk asked, "How did you find him so fast?"

The tiny skunk answered, "It was easy. In stinct!"

"OUTDOOR CLASSROOM"

 COMMUNITY PROJECT

Every few years, the Conestoga Elementary PTO focuses on a major project.  Our PTO was enlightened by research revealing the necessity of contact with nature for a healthy child.  We learned that time in nature inspires creativity, reduces stress, improves test scores, health concentration, behavior, reduces obesity, depression, attention deficit disorder while promoting humility and connection.  With the help of students, parents, staff and the community, our PTO has been raising and saving money for the past two years towards this community project.   We are now ready to break ground and are looking to the community to help fulfill our vision.  The following is a list of needed resources and volunteers:

  • help to remove broken concrete from the school/do you have a place we can put this concrete (not much)
  • pick-ups and drivers to haul and unload dirt, mulch and sand
  • donations of cut or fallen hardwood trees (oak, walnut, ash and hackberry preferred)  2' - 4' in diameter.  These trees will be used to line the entrance as well as provide natural seating, stepping stones and enclose areas.
  • help to plant trees, shrubs and flowers
  • donations of used tractor tires for a "hill of tires" planted in sand
  • brick pavers or cobblestone to be used as the floor to the entrance of the classroom
  • boulders - we will be building a bridge over a currently hazardous drainage area and would like to install boulders around it for kids to climb
  • construction experience or willingness to help build a stage area and bridge
  • framer - we are looking for a framer to help put up the facade of a school which will provide the backdrop to our stage.  We envision this to be wrapped in siding, so will also need siding installation experience.
  • concrete - we will be seeking bids for concrete to connect the areas within the classroom.  We are interested in part of this path being stamped with animal footprints.

  • Do you need help envisioning such a classroom?  Please visit the following site to view an outdoor classroom in South Omaha:  http://www.ops.org/elementary/gomezheritage/OutdoorClassroom/tabid/250/Default.aspx

If you have any of these items on your property and would be willing to donate them or if you are interested in donating your time and talent, we can make our dream come true!  If you would like to see the professional drawings of this classroom or to get involved, please contact Allison Welch at 402-235-2539 or email me at  allisonwelch@windstream.net

There are also inspiring stories of real-life fiddlers ("Cactus Pete"), teachers ("Alice Johnson's Jig"),

    SENATOR LAMBERT

               to

        SERVE YOU!

    2012 Senator_Paul_Lambert

    Some Proposals Don't Prompt Headlines

April 6, 2012, Lincoln— Since the legislature convened in January, the media has reported on bills that are controversial or may have a significant impact on Nebraska citizens. You have heard a lot about child welfare reform, tax relief, the state budget, oil pipelines, school truancy, compulsory school attendance, and more. While these issues made headlines, the legislature passed many other bills. Even though they have not received a great deal of attention, I want you to know about some of the small but important changes these bills have made in our laws.

As amended, LB 216 would allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to design license plates to identify special interest motor vehicles. Special interest vehicles are defined as being unaltered from original specifications and collected, preserved, restored or maintained for leisure. The new plates would include alphanumeric characters and the words "special interest." A special interest vehicle could be driven only on public roads and streets for occasional transportation, public display or hobby activities.

LB 943 created the Insured Homeowner's Protection Act. The Act would provide that a person may cancel a written contract with a residential contractor to provide goods or services to be paid from insurance proceeds before midnight following the later of two events – either the third business day after the written contract is enacted, or when the person has received notice from the insurer that all or part of the claim or contract is not a covered loss under the insurance policy. LB 943 would also prevent the contractor from promising to rebate any of the insurance deductible as an incentive to sell goods or services.

Changes to the state's Election Act would be made by LB 878. In the year before a primary election, the date on which the secretary of state would publish the official election calendar would move from December 1 to November 1. Currently, if a majority of the seats are vacant, the secretary of state conducts a special election for a school district or a city council under a city manager plan. LB 878 would require a special election to be held if one-half or more of the member positions are vacant. The bill would also clarify that the statewide primary ballot would include the names of candidates who filed candidate forms, and candidates for President of the United States who are offered by petition or recognized as candidates in the national news media.

Under current law a person who fails to stop for a school bus is guilty of a Class IV misdemeanor. Under Speaker Priority Bill LB 1039, a violator would be assessed three points on their driver's license and a $500 fine. The bill would also require drivers to decrease their speed to 25 miles per hour when the yellow warning lights on the bus are flashing and stop if when the red lights are on. In places where 400 feet of visibility in all directions is not possible, LB 1039 would allow a bus to stop if a sign indicated that a school bus stop was ahead.

LB 882, by Omaha Senator Jeremy Nordquist, would require a health plan or policy to provide coverage for orally administered anticancer medication on a basis that is no less favorable than more traditional intravenously administered or injected cancer medications. The bill would prevent insurance providers from reclassifying an anticancer medication or increasing a copayment, deductible or other expense to offset the cost of complying with the new law.

The provisions in LB 740 would grant special permits for vehicles hauling seasonally harvested products. The permit would allow longer combination vehicles to carry an additional fifteen percent of the maximum weight allowed for up to 70 miles. The permits would be valid for up to 120 days per calendar year. This change will make Nebraska more competitive, especially when doing business in other states.

Please contact my office if you need more information about these or any of the other bills passed this year. I am always interested in hearing your comments by mail, phone or email.

     red-cross

Celebrate National Volunteer Week by Donating Blood

This National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, the American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make an appointment to donate and help save lives. Approximately every two seconds a patient in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Thanks to volunteer blood donors, the Red Cross is able to provide needed blood products to local hospitals and more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers around the country.

With blood products currently being delivered to hospitals as quickly as they are coming in, the Red Cross needs donors to roll up a sleeve to ensure blood is there for patients whenever and wherever it is needed.

In the hour it takes to donate blood, donors can help save the lives of more than one patient. Only 3 percent of the U.S. population currently donates blood. Become a Red Cross volunteer donor and join a family of blood donors across the nation in a lifesaving cause.

    How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

    About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation's blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
