GOLF BUDDIES REUNITE!

Above, left to right, Matt and Mike Zeigler, Denny and Derek Butts.

Mike, Matt, Derek and Denny share a special Father's Day ice cream cake!
Old friends got the chance to share several days of golf (on many different courses) in Utah last week. Denny Butts, coach of Conestoga's golf teams in the mid-90's and Assistant Coach, Mike Zeigler, and their sons, Derek Butts and Matt Zeigler met, with their families, for a fun week. Derek and Matt were celebrating their 20-year (class) reunion.
From its' inception in the spring of 1995, there was a total of 19 boy and girl golfers. That spring, the boys finished as conference Runner-up and missed going to State by only one stroke. The girls' team in the fall did not finish lower than 5th in any meet and was the Tri-County Invite Runner-up. The boys' team in 1996 won 4 major meets and finished the season bringing home the State trophy for 1st place, which was, at that time, a first in Conestoga team history.
The trophy photo above was taken from the cookbook the golfers made to help raise funds for the golf program. The kids also held garage sales and did other fundraising events in order to continue to have a golf club. The Conestoga boys State champs also included teammates David Davis, Buddy Skogheim and Adam Dubas.
Wow! Twenty-two years ago? Seems like only yesterday...

(L) Britta Lindseth (3) and Juliana Lindseth (6) pick up cigarette butts at Hickory Hills Park in Papillion.
'Bag the Butts' for 'World No Tobacco Day'
May 31st, 2018 was World No Tobacco Day and Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands, along with 129 community volunteers “bagged the butts” in 17 playgrounds and parks in Cass and Sarpy County.
Cigarette waste is the #1 littered item on the planet. These butts are filled with cancer-causing chemicals that get into our soil, groundwater, lakes, streams, and playgrounds.
Volunteers picked up thousands of cigarette butts, dozens of chew containers/cigarette packs, and even an electronic cigarette. There were stark differences between park areas that have formal tobacco-free policies and those that don’t; with 7 cigarette butts being found in the Elmwood park and hundreds at Walnut Creek in Papillion and Haworth Park in Bellevue.
Litter Gitters, a group of about 30 youth took part in the event. Jennelle Simon, group founder, expressed her appreciation of the event, “I am glad the Litter Gitters were involved with T.E.A.M to clean up the cigarette butts. While they were picking up the park, they had a lot pride about keeping their community clean. It also reinforced another negative impact of tobacco use and their commitment that they will never smoke or litter.”
Additional special thanks to Veridian Credit Union, Sarpy YMCA, Sarpy County Cooperative Head Start, Plattsmouth Chamber, Plattsmouth Community Center, CHI Health Midlands, Sarpy/Cass Health Department, and the Monster Hares 4-H Club for signing up teams.
For more information about Tobacco Free Parks, call Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands (T.E.A.M.) at 402.593.3022 or email autumn.burns@alegent.org.

Stenberg Reminds Young Photographers & Families of
June 30 Deadline for NEST on the Farm Drawing
The deadline for entries in the 2018 NEST on the Farm Fun Photo Drawing is June 30, Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg reminded Nebraska families. Six winners will each receive a $1,000 NEST 529 College Savings Plan contribution in the drawing, which is open to children age 13 and younger and their families.
Nebraska residents can submit farm- or ranch-themed photos taken of or by children 13 years old or younger to be eligible to win one of the six $1,000 NEST 529 contributions. Entries are accepted by mail and online at NEST529.com/scholarships. Entries also are accepted on the NEST 529 Facebook page in a tab on the right, titled “NEST on the Farm.”
“As Trustee of NEST 529, I look forward to this annual event and to hosting the winners in the Family Fun Zone at the Nebraska State Fair. NEST on the Farm provides a perfect opportunity for families to begin saving for the expense of higher education and to learn about effective ways to save through our excellent state-sponsored college savings program, which provides significant tax benefits for Nebraska savers,” Stenberg said.
“There’s no better place to emphasize the values of farm and ranch life and the importance of agriculture to the state’s economy than the Nebraska State Fair,’ Stenberg said. “The NEST on the Farm photos cause us all to stop and appreciate the rural life around us and the values of hard work, honesty, and family that rural life promotes and we all appreciate.”
Money for the NEST 529 contributions comes from First National Bank of Omaha, Program Manager of NEST. To enter the NEST on the Farm drawing, the photographer or the subject must be 13 years old or younger as of June 30, 2018. Submissions will be split into two age groups: newborn to 5 years old and 6 to 13 years old. In mid-July, NEST randomly will select one winner from each age group in each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts.
For scholarship contest rules, visit NEST529.com/scholarships. Contest rules also are available at treasurer.nebraska.gov/csp/scholarships.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LENDING PROGRAM
The Great Plains Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association has a wonderful instrument lending program, so please share this information with folks that you know. Here is the information from Jim Wood:
"We are in full swing looking for kids ages 5 to 16 who want to learn to play a bluegrass/old time instrument!
The instruments we are lending include guitar, fiddles of different sizes, banjo, and mandolin, and have recently been gifted with a fine Dobro, thanks to Doug Van Horn.
These instruments may be borrowed for a year as long as the learner has a mentor from our music association.
The mentor will be selected by the student and parent.
This mentor will give the Instrument lending committee a report of progress every three months."
If you wish to get an application to this Lending program, please contact Jim Wood at 402-397-4673 or jkwood@unomaha.edu.
