Now is Your Time to Quit Tobacco
Keeping New Year’s self-improvement promises can be difficult. Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands and the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline want to help you make 2018 a tobacco-free year.
Through June 15 (while supplies last), the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline is providing extra assistance for those who are ready to quit with a two-week supply of no-cost nicotine replacement therapy.
"Quitting isn't easy, but with the Quitline, tobacco-users have a whole team of support on their side," Autumn Sky Burns, T.E.A.M. Coordinator said. "Get the tools you need to be successful by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW, talking with your healthcare provider, and building that support from friends and family.
Call the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline (available 24/7) and ask about the no-cost nicotine patches, gum or lozenges. This offer is available for Nebraska residents who are 18 years of age or older. Callers will be screened for medical eligibility to receive the medication, which is shipped directly to the caller’s home. All information provided to the Quitline is confidential.
“It is never too late to quit. Quitting brings immediate advantages to not just tobacco-users, but their families are well,” Burns said.
For help quitting, the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), and for Spanish services at 1-855-DÉJELO-YA (1-855-355-3569). Translation services are also available in more than 170 languages. For additional resources visit www.QuitNow.ne.gov.

$100 Bonus to Be Awarded to First 100 New Accounts
First National Bank of Omaha and Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg are helping new account owners kick start their college savings just in time for 529 Day with the NEST 529 College Savings Plan $100 bonus program.
The program, which launched today (May 15) and runs through May 31, will award the first 100 new college savings accounts with a $100 bonus each, when using a promotional code available at NEST529.com/bonus100. Blood Donation Opportunities to June 15, 2018
Summer blood donations can help to prevent a shortage
The American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to give blood and help ensure patient needs can be met this summer.
Around Memorial Day, the Red Cross sees a steep decline in blood donations.
Busy summer schedules, vacations and school breaks also cause a drop in donations.
Accidents and medical emergencies don’t take a summer break – patients need blood every minute, every day.
In the summer of 1973, Ramona Johnson was playing at the park when she was injured jumping off the swings. She was bleeding profusely from a 7-inch gash in her leg. By the time she reached the hospital, she needed an emergency transfusion. She credits the donors who took the time to give blood with helping to save her life.
Johnson’s childhood experience receiving blood compelled her to make her first blood donation more than 10 years ago. “A little voice told me that this would be a great way to give back,” she said. “I have been faithfully donating every eight weeks since.”
The public is asked to schedule an appointment to help ensure that hospitals and patients have the blood they need this summer. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.
A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

It is a 'hilly' run so runners appreciate the encouragement!

The Lofte Community Theatre, located in Manley, NE will stage William Gibson’s award-winning drama, The Miracle Worker June 1 - 3, and June 7 - 10..
Set in 1880s, Tuscumbia, Alabama this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.
Over the years, the play has also successfully been adapted for screen and television. Most notably, the 1962 film adaptation which garnered Oscar wins for both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke.
“Staging The Miracle Worker has been a labor of love.” said Lofte Community Theatre Executive Director, Kevin Colbert. “As plays go, The Miracle Worker is already a heavy piece of literature. Add to that, the complicated staging which must be timed perfectly, and you have some wonderfully challenging obstacles that any actor would love to sink their teeth into. It’s just been a lot of fun, and a lot of learning..”
The cast of The Miracle Worker includes Gary Williams, John Bell, Emma Johnson, Riley Perez, Rachel Radloff and Skyler Radloff of Omaha, Rosalie Duffy, Gabriella Bakirane, Cathy Apolot, Wade Mumford, Nicholas Roth, and Brenna J. ELECTRONICS RECYCLING EVENT
MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR JUNE 2, 2018
Cass County, NE residents may bring any electronics and small appliances for recycling or refurbishing to Elmwood NE from 10 am - 2 pm on Saturday, June 2nd.
Cross Electronics Recycling will be asisting KCCB with the event which is open to all Cass County residents.
Materials accepted include computers, monitors, televisions, printers, key boards and mice, cell phones, small appliances such as vacuum cleaners, power tools and anything with a cord or battery. Large appliances and metals will be collected by a local recycler.
KCCCB WILL PAY HALF OF THE RECYCLING FEE OF ONE ITEM PER HOUSEHOLD, UP TO A TOTAL OF $500 FOR THE COLLECTION.
The following will have a recycling disposal fee:
alkaline batteries, $1.50/pound
microwave ovens, $20
televisions and CRT items, $20 up to 20-inch, $30 up to 30-n, $40 up to 40-inch, $50 up to 50-inch and so forth.
All other items will be accepted at no cost.
The collections are open to Cass County residents only. NO commercial quantities.

The Great Plains Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association has a wonderful instrument lending program, so please share this information with folks that you know. Here is the information from Jim Wood:
"We are in full swing looking for kids ages 5 to 16 who want to learn to play a bluegrass/old time instrument!
The instruments we are lending include guitar, fiddles of different sizes, banjo, and mandolin, and have recently been gifted with a fine Dobro, thanks to Doug Van Horn.
These instruments may be borrowed for a year as long as the learner has a mentor from our music association.
The mentor will be selected by the student and parent.
This mentor will give the Instrument lending committee a report of progress every three months."

Experience Works is a national, non-profit organization funded by the US Dept of Labor to administer the Senior Community Service Employment Program, which assists people 55 and older in getting updated training to assist in returning to the workforce. This is a federally funded program and offers a no-cost employment service to older adults who qualify.
Once accepted into the program, individuals are placed in a training site in or near their community, where they gain on the job experience while working 20-21 hours/week at $8/hour.
We also help with skill assessments, computer training, resumes, cover letters, job search, etc.
The goal is that through the training and job search assistance we gain help older adults gain good jobs in or around their communities.
