RECYCLE YOUR EXTRA PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS!
Our local Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts need your help with a service project they're doing. They have a wonderful opportunity to make "plarn", (plastic yarn), that one of the moms will generously crochet into mats. The mats, made from plastic grocery bags, are lightweight, warm in the winter, cool in the summer, easy to clean and bugs don't like them. Fewer bags means they won't be going into the landfill or blowing across our fields and yards. The bonus is that the mats will then be donated to the Open Door Mission...a 'win-win' for everyone!
You may bring your clean bags of any size to Murray Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 28th, between 10:30 and 11:15.
Thanks for your help!

ATTENTION 7th and 8th GRADE STUDENTS!
Treasurer Stenberg, Omaha Storm Chasers Announce 13th Annual
'Why I Want to Go to College'
Writing Contest for Seventh, Eighth Graders
While a Sunday afternoon at the ball park may seem far away, the time is here for seventh and eighth graders to enter the 13th annual "Why I Want to Go to College" writing contest sponsored by the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office and the Omaha Storm Chasers, State Treasurer Don Stenberg said today. Twelve winners will be recognized at the May 10 Storm Chasers game at Werner Park in Papillion, Neb. Three winners will be chosen in each of Nebraska's three U.S. Congressional districts, and three winners will be selected from outside Nebraska. First-place winners will each receive a $2,000 contribution to a NEST college savings plan. Second-place winners will each receive a $1,000 contribution to a NEST plan, and third-place winners will each receive a $500 contribution to a NEST plan. First-place winners from Nebraska will receive a one-night hotel stay in Omaha, and all Nebraska winners will receive tickets to the May 10 game.
"Every year we are impressed with the big plans that seventh and eighth graders write about in their 'Why I Want to Go to College' essays," Treasurer Stenberg said. "But we are also struck by the students' references to their family members, teachers, neighbors, and friends who inspire and motivate them to do well. Contributing to a NEST college savings account for a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or friend can go a long way to making these big plans reality." Treasurer Stenberg said he encourages all seventh and eighth graders in public schools, private schools, and home schools in Nebraska to enter. A total of 1,044 entries were received last year. As in the past, preliminary judging will be done by students and faculty in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and final selections will be made by Treasurer Stenberg.
Entries must be postmarked by March 27, 2015. Contest rules are available athttp://treasurer.nebraska.gov/csp/scholarships/essay/college/2015/contest-announcement/.
The following rules apply to contest entries:
No longer than 750 words.
Subject matter to be focused on the student's educational goals and dreams for the future.
Must be student's original work.
Must be typed, double spaced on 8 ½ X 11-inch paper.
Must be accompanied by required cover sheet.
Entries to be mailed to Andrea Stava, assistant general manager of operations, Omaha Storm Chasers, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, Neb. 68046.
Essays must be postmarked by March 27, 2015. Winners will be notified in late April.

SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES' EVENTS.....
DESTINATION IMAGINATION REGIONAL WINNERS
Several area Destination Imagination (DI) teams competed in the Regional tournament at Blair High School on Saturday, March 7, 2015. Destination Imagination is a program that encourages children to have fun, take risks, focus, and frame challenges, while incorporating science, technology, engineering, mathematics, the arts, and service learning.
There are six competitive Team Challenges to choose from each year, which are Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational, or Service Learning.
Participants choose a Team Challenge and learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. They compete in different divisions based on age and grade level, including elementary, middle school, and secondary/high school levels.
The teams showcase their solutions to the Team Challenge at the tournament. The teams also compete in Instant Challenges at the competition, where they must think quickly to produce a solution in a period of just 5 to 8 minutes. The Team and Instant Challenges are open-ended problems that have an infinite number of solutions to promote creative problem solving.
Each team's scores for both the Team and Instant Challenges are scaled and added together to create the final team total score. They are ranked according to their total score. If their scores are high enough, they can advance to the State/Affiliate tournament. The top three scoring teams at each level also receive 'place' awards.
Destination Imagination tournament officials can also choose to nominate a team or an individual for special awards for outstanding work. The DaVinci Award is offered for exceptional creativity, a unique approach to the problem, and/or risk taking. This is DI's most prestigious award and recognizes outstanding creativity.
It was the first time in DI for each of the children on the team consisting entirely of 4th graders from Hayward Elementary in Nebraska City. Their team name is "The DOC's (Doctors Of Creativity)". This team is managed by Jill Nichols. Team members include Sam Bennett, Claire Boeche, Connor Causgrove, Anya Maness, Jake Nichols, Lucas Nielsen, and Jaci Recker. They competed in the scientific challenge called "Making Waves", which required them to design and construct an 'Incredible Sound Machine' that produces two different sounds by two different methods, create and integrate two visible displays of the sound waves created by the sound machine into their presentation, create and present an 8-minute story that includes a change to a faster or slower narrative pace, and create and present two 'Team Choice Elements' to feature during the presentation. This team earned 1st Place honors at the Regional competition, as well as two special awards.
At the Regional competition, 97 teams and nearly 700 children participated in the tournament. There was only one team DaVinci Award and one individual DaVinci Award presented. "The DOC's" received the team award for outstanding creativity in solving their Team Challenge. Jake Nichols from "The DOC's" received the individual award for his innovative and unique design of the 'Incredible Sound Machine' that he built as part of the solution to the Team Challenge.
"The DOC's" will now compete at the State Affiliate tournament at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on April 11, 2015. If the team finishes in first or second place at that tournament, they will have the opportunity to advance to Global finals, which will be held May 19-23, 2015, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
*(Editor's note: Jake Nichols, winner of the DaVinci Award is from Nehawka, NE.)
