A LUNAR ECLIPSE HAPPENS ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 8, 2014, a total lunar eclipse occurred. I took a drive out further in the country, away from any lights that would distract from the beauty of this rare occurrence. As I stood there in awe of what I was witnessing, the silence was overwhelming, then broken by a farmer, up early to get the combine to the field. A friend stopped to be sure everything was okay. Then, back to quiet.

6:56 a.m.
7:11 a.m.
In a matter of minutes, the shadow of the earth slipped into the darkness of the atmosphere,
7:14 a.m.
clouds crept in front of the moon, I turned 180*, and morning had broken with the glorious sunrise.
7:23 a.m.
No better way to start the day!

'ROSIE PINK' PANCAKES
Nothing's much sweeter than eating hot pancakes and sausage to help a friend! On Sunday, October 12th, a pancake feed fundraiser was held at the Nehawka Community Center for Rosie Redden, a former Nehawka resident who now resides in Nebraska City. Twenty years ago, Rosie fought off breast cancer, but this summer learned that it had come back for, what we all hope, is a 'short' visit. She's been going through chemo for 2 1/2 months now, and is ready to kick cancer's butt for a second time. She's such an inspiration with that big smile on her beautiful face!
Many years ago, Rosie worked at the Nehawka school and even had her own restaurant, the Village Cafe in Nehawka. If anyone heard those magic words, 'Rosie's cooking', they'd be there! I remember her hamburgers with the buttered, grilled buns - yum! She's been working at the Nebraska City Eagles Club for a few years, now, too. She has volunteered many, many hours to help out with benefits and fundraisers for many others and their causes, too. Most recently, she helped cook for WW2 vets from Kearney, who were on their way to DC, with a 'detour' to the Nebraska City Eagles Club. It was now time for others to help her out.
In 1959 I met Rosie when my family moved from Lincoln to Nehawka. The previous year my sis had passed away at the tender age of only 13. Mom and Dad came to Nehawka to be closer to Dad's work at Offutt and it was there that Rosie befriended my parents. As an adult with kids of my own, my mother told me that Rosie, pretty much, helped her get through her grief of losing her oldest child, a pain no parent should have to bear.
My parents, and Rosie and her husband, Howard, loved to play cards and many Saturday evenings were spent with our family at their house or theirs' at ours, while they played cards in the kitchen till the wee morning hours. Us kids would camp on the living room floor and watch 'Creature Feature', listening to all the laughter coming from around the kitchen table. in the mornings, a giant Tupperware bowl or dishpan held the kernels of, now stale, popcorn from the night before. I can remember waking up on the floor many times to the smell of bacon and eggs or cinnamon rolls for Sunday breakfast, 'cause they'd played cards straight through the night! Crazy grown-ups!
One of my favorite memories is of Mom and Rosie taking us kids, my little brother, Bob, and Rosie's kids, Pam, Wes and Cindy to Nebraska City to the swimming pool. First we'd have to go downtown to the Sears store and wait while Mom and Rosie went inside to watch heir 'story' which came on at 12:30. 'As the World Turns' was on the tv's on the sales floor and they couldn't miss out on a minute of those fake peoples' lives! Then at 1:00 sharp, we'd jump in the car and hit the bowl-shaped pool over at Steinhart Park, while our moms sat outside the fence and talked while watching us. They made every minute count, 'cause we'd have to get back home after a couple of hours, so they could get clothes off the lines and suppers started before our dads got home.
What fun memories I have of that time and it was largely in part to the friendship of Rosie!
Sisters, Alberta and Rosie.
Wes and Kyle are waiting for the griddle to get to just the right temperature.
The crowd's growing, coming from Omaha and Lincoln, too.
Bud stopped in to wish Rosie well.
Lots of laughs with good friends, Dinah and Roger!
Gladys wouldn't miss this either!
Minnie Mae and Mary came from Murray and Plattsmouth, too.
The crowd just kept coming...
And Shelly stopped by to say, 'Hi', too!
It was a fun day for a great lady who's logged uncountable hours volunteering for others!
