Phelps County Gets $30 Million Expansion
Cargill has begun work on expanding its current grain facility in Phelps County. The project will allow the new state-of-the-art facility to process 80,000 bushels of grain per hour and unload 60 to 70 trucks an hour, speeding up the unloading process. The current facility handles 25,000 bushels per hour.
According to Phil Harders, group leader for Cargill AgHorizons Cornhusker Farm Service, this particular company location seems like a likely candidate for investment because of the region's highly irrigated productive cropland.
The project also includes adding rail service along the BNSF tracks near the facility, allowing it to be marketed and transported by train to other areas of the country. At peak construction capacity, more than 100 contractors will be working on the Cargill project at one time.
The company also received help from the Phelps County Development Corporation, City of Holdrege (which worked with the village of Atlanta that is closer to the Cargill facility), and Phelps County Board of Supervisors.
The facility will employ eight people, one on-location grain marketer and three grain marketers who will work from home.
Wahoo Welcomes New Steel Foundry
Omaha Steel Castings Co. has opened a new $17.5 million steel foundry in northeast Wahoo. The new facility features 100,000 sq. ft. of production space and 30,000 sq. ft. of storage. The company, which forges parts for industrial companies, including Caterpillar, hopes to have 175 employees working in Wahoo by the end of 2013, and as many as 250 employees in the near future.
The company started out in 1906 fabricating steel structures for bridgework, truck bodies and trailers. During the 1920's the company began manufacturing castings, and by 1922 it was awarded the contract for all of the State Capital building's steel-work. During the 1940's, the company established a relationship with Caterpillar Tractor Company, which is still the company's largest customer.

HOSPICE WORKSHOP IN HONOR OF
NATIONAL HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH
The Sarpy/Cass Department of Health & Wellness, in partnership with Hillcrest Health Services and Partnerships in Aging, will sponsor a FREE hospice workshop on Monday, November 4 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Health Services, 1902 Harlan Drive in Bellevue. This workshop is provided as part of National Hospice and Palliative Care month. Individuals wanting to learn more about end of life care options and the hospice experience are welcome to attend.
During this workshop, participants will explore the hospice experience from the perspective of the caregiver and family, while discussing the fear of death that is prevalent in American culture. Experts in end of life care from Hillcrest Health Services will also discuss the hospice philosophy, levels of care and insurance coverage options for hospice services.
"Educating our community about end of life care options can help reduce the fears associated with these difficult healthcare decisions," commented Nicole Evans, Sarpy/Cass Department of Health & Wellness Community Health Educator. "Our goal is to empower individuals facing life?limiting illness to make informed healthcare decisions reflective of their values, beliefs and preferences for care at the end of life."
According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, "Every year more than 1.65 million people living with a life-limiting illness receive care from hospice palliative care providers in the US," (NHPCO, 2013). "Hospice and palliative care provides expert pain management, symptom control, emotional support and spiritual care to patients and family caregivers when a cure is not possible."
There is no fee to attend this program and preregistration is required. Call 402.339.4334 ext. 209 or email nevans@sarpy.com by October 30, 2013 to register. For more information on the Senior CARE Program or upcoming events, please visit www.sarpycasshealthdepartment.org/Seniors.html. The
Sarpy/Cass Department of Health & Wellness strives to improve the lives of citizens living in Sarpy and Cass counties by promoting the health of our community through disease prevention, partnerships, policy development and health education.
