 HAPPY MAY DAY!

MayDayConeCraft

Don't forget to make and deliver May Baskets today!

What?! You don't know what May Baskets are?

You don't deliver them by Instagram, email or on Facebook, but in person!  Do you remember what that's like?

Well...when I was a kid, we made little construction paper baskets or used cupcake paper liners and put little pieces of candy, peanuts or popcorn in them. In recent years, we used paper cups. If you want,  you can glue a construction paper handle on them or poke a wire bag tie, ribbon, yarn or pipe cleaner through for a handle. Then, you take them to your friends' homes, hang them on the door knob or put them beside the front door, (not in front of the door or they might get stepped on!). Then knock or ring the doorbell and run and hide! If you're the hider and get caught you're supposed to receive a kiss! So if you want to make an exceptional May Basket for that certain someone, be sure you don't run too fast!

The Conestoga Elementary PTO has received a grant in the amount of $2,000 from the Whole Kids Foundation to be used for classroom gardens in their outdoor classroom, Cougar Hollow.  The PTO hopes to install six raised gardens, allowing each grade to care for their own garden.  The gardens have been planned according to the school calendar so that the harvest can be utilized in our cafeteria as well as supplement our backpack program.  Look for progress on our gardens and our outdoor classroom, Cougar Hollow, on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CougarHollowOutdoorClassroom.

DRUMS of the WORLD

On Sunday, May 12, at 2:30 PM, the Schoolhouse Performance Series presents "Drums of the World", with Michael Fitzsimmons, percussionist and award winning composer.  This concert will feature rare instruments from Switzerland called Hang – reminiscent of the steel drums of Trinidad.  Incorporating the Hang with over 30 years' experience as a composer and performer, Michael has spellbound audiences with the beautiful, other worldly sounds of these unique and intriguing instruments.  Michael is a solo artist with the Nebraska Arts Council's Touring Program, performing in schools, communities, and corporate settings. As a master teaching artist with University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Arts Are Basic, and a resident teaching artist with Nebraska Arts Council, Fitzsimmons provides programs for music and story as a way of learning at many regional schools.   Michael is a leader of full day music workshops with G.A.T.E.(Grief and the Arts Training Experience) for therapists, school teachers, hospital teams, and individual groups. He is a skilled performer of diverse percussion instruments including drums, African instruments, Mbira (thumb piano), Plains Indian flutes, Brazilian percussion flutes, various bamboo flutes. The concert will be followed by a drum circle.  Michael's drum circles are a "hit" with young and old alike!

The concert will be downstairs in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, and  followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers.  Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur,  one mile south of Highway 34.  Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $1.00 for children. Seating is limited. For more information, write to  Greenblatt & Seay, The Old Schoolhouse, P.O. Box 671, Avoca, Nebraska, 68307, or e-mail them at debby@greenblattandseay.com or call 402-275-3221.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.  Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.
