DRUMS of the WORLD

On Sunday, May 12, at 2:30 PM, the Schoolhouse Performance Series presents "Drums of the World", with Michael Fitzsimmons, percussionist and award winning composer.  This concert will feature rare instruments from Switzerland called Hang – reminiscent of the steel drums of Trinidad.  Incorporating the Hang with over 30 years' experience as a composer and performer, Michael has spellbound audiences with the beautiful, other worldly sounds of these unique and intriguing instruments.  Michael is a solo artist with the Nebraska Arts Council's Touring Program, performing in schools, communities, and corporate settings. As a master teaching artist with University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Arts Are Basic, and a resident teaching artist with Nebraska Arts Council, Fitzsimmons provides programs for music and story as a way of learning at many regional schools.   Michael is a leader of full day music workshops with G.A.T.E.(Grief and the Arts Training Experience) for therapists, school teachers, hospital teams, and individual groups. He is a skilled performer of diverse percussion instruments including drums, African instruments, Mbira (thumb piano), Plains Indian flutes, Brazilian percussion flutes, various bamboo flutes. The concert will be followed by a drum circle.  Michael's drum circles are a "hit" with young and old alike!

The concert will be downstairs in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, and  followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers.  Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur,  one mile south of Highway 34.  Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $1.00 for children. Seating is limited. For more information, write to  Greenblatt & Seay, The Old Schoolhouse, P.O. Box 671, Avoca, Nebraska, 68307, or e-mail them at debby@greenblattandseay.com or call 402-275-3221.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.  Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.

Hildegard Center for the Arts will continue its year-long effort to celebrate Heroes Among Us for communities in Southeastern Nebraska and beyond by serving as Corporate Sponsor for another fresh and exciting opportunity, this time for men, called

Am I That Man?.

Developed by Lincoln-native Ron Scheidt, this inspiring mentorship program follows his highly acclaimed new book “Am I That Man? Scheidt and Willis believe that men of all ages today are facing more challenges and mixed messages than at any other time in our history. Co-founders of Am I That Man? Ron Scheidt and Brian Willis will speak at both events. All presenters will share how the power of heroes, role models and mentors impacted their lives and how being a mentor for someone else can positively impact their future.

MEDICINE BOTTLES

Hy-Vee Drug Take- Back

America has a drug problem. It is estimated that 30,000 Americans will die from prescription drug abuse and overdose this year. Every 19 minutes there is a death from a drug overdose. Disposal of unwanted, unused and expired drugs helps to reduce drug abuse and is something we can all do.

Several reasons why you should dispose of unused, expired and unwanted medications:

Unwanted medications can be tempting to children and pets and result in a poisoning.

It is unsafe to reuse medications.

Unused medications are often ineffective because they have been kept past their expiration date or improperly stored.

Unused medications can make your home a target of theft by drug abusers.

What is the best way to dispose of medications? Flushing is a problem as the drugs contaminate our water. In a 2002 study, low concentrations of medications were found in Nebraska streams and groundwater.

Hy-Vee stores in the Omaha- area are now accepting non-controlled medication in their pharmacies.  They are providing a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of medications and providing education to the general public about the potential for abuse.

YESTERDAY and TODAY!

AT the LOFTE THEATRE

2013-03-27 Yesterday__Today

The British are coming!  The British are coming!  The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces the production, "Yesterday and Today!" will be on the Lofte stage Saturday, April 20 at 7:30pm and Sunday, April 21 at 2pm.   Tribute artist and Nebraska native, Billy McGuigan will lead the interactive Beatles experience.  In this electrifying show, audiences create the playlist so each performance is fresh and unique.  There are no costumes or wigs; just great music in a wonderfully beautiful setting.
