Calling all Teachers and Parents  

of  

 Gifted Writing Students 

Hildegard Center for the Arts is offering an exciting writing competition for kids in grades 6-12 that will result in a published book. The theme of the competition is “Heroes” and invites kids to write about their heroes known to them personally or in their community. Entries must be 500 words or less and can be in the form of a short story, essay, poetry, memoir, blog, a diary/journal entry or song lyrics.  Winning entries will be published in a book and the students, along with their heroes and schools will be honored at special reception next spring, April 28, 2013 at Lincoln Southwest High School.  All winners, their heroes and schools will receive a free copy of their published book. 

The writing competition is just one of an exciting line-up of projects and events (for the 2012-2013 school year) at Hildegard Center for the Arts calledHeroes Among Us. Through the generous corporate sponsorship of Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, and additional support from the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Hildegard Center for the Arts is offering kids several creative opportunities to explore the concept of heroes and discover the “hero within”. 

Beginning the first of next year, Hildegard will also offer “Heroes” competitions in the Visual Arts and Short Film, both with March 2013 deadline dates. Inspiring “Heroes” workshops tailored for at-risk kids at People City Mission, Lighthouse, Cedars Youth Services and Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach are also currently underway in Lincoln.

About the Nebraska Humanities Council

Heroes Among Us is one of many grants funded by the Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC).  The NHC awards more than $200,000 in grants each year. 

Created in 1973 as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC) is an independent, non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of public and academic members.  The Nebraska Humanities Council funds programs that explore Nebraska’s heritage, build community awareness, and strengthen our ties to cultural traditions at home and abroad.

Any non-profit group is eligible to apply for a grant from the NHC.  The NHC staff is available for grant consultation and will read proposal drafts.  Contact the NHC office if you need assistance with a project idea.
