"Shine on, shine on harvest moon
Up in the sky,
I ain't had no lovin'
Since January, February, June or July.......
Snow time - ain't no time to stay
Outdoors and spoon,
So shine one, shine on harvest noon
For me and my gal."

Trade Mission to China Nets Favorable Outcomes and Builds Future Trade and Development
Nebraska Opens China Trade Office
The recent Governor-led trade mission to China with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development was intent on increasing exports, attracting new Chinese investment into Nebraska, developing and expanding relationships with high-level government officials and business associates, and opening Nebraska's second overseas trade office. The 30 representatives from 20 privately-held Nebraska companies were not disappointed.
In the targeted cities of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, representatives were introduced to potential business partners through business matchmaking meetings.
Successful ventures announced during the mission include Omaha-based Right at Home, whose Chinese partner Right at Home China in Beijing…the company’s newest international franchise of the homecare services provider, which following its first year in China is expanding into four more areas of China.
Also taking place was a signing ceremony between the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s (UNMC) UneMed, Vireo Resources, LLC, a specialty nutraceutical product processing and packaging company in Plattsmouth, Neb., and Beijing Ronghuaboshi Biotechnology Inc., their first distributor in China. This successful partnership could boost production at Vireo’s Plattsmouth plant so much that a facility 4-6 times the current size may be built, in addition to the hiring of more full-time employees.
Additionally, Behlen Mfg. Co., signed a new joint venture with Beijing Uni-Construction Group Co. Ltd. The new venture is not only expected to lead to increased sales in China, but because of the Chinese company’s large international presence, Behlen officials believe it will potentially boost exports from Columbus, Neb., to some of the affiliated international markets.
A broader scope of the Mission included hosting educational events where Nebraska company representatives sought advice and market information from U.S. government and private-sector specialists with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Shanghai American Chamber of Commerce, Gallup China, Tractus Asia, and Nebraska company leaders already operating in China. These educational events focused on learning more about the Chinese market and how to do business there.
In the three cities visited, the Governor and DED staff made presentations to more than 350 total Chinese companies interested in investing in the America. Other DED partners attending the events included the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce in all cities visited, and the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development in Shanghai. The Governor also participated in private meetings with the heads of approximately 20 large Chinese companies looking to expand operations into the U.S.
Relationships are key in China, said Joe Chapuran, manager of DED’s International Trade and Investment Division, whether looking at attracting investment from Chinese companies, or helping Nebraska companies enter the Chinese market.
The closer the ties among Chinese businesses and regional and national Chinese government agencies, the greater the influence on their international business decisions and efforts, added Chapuran.
For example, The China Council for Promotion of International Trade and the State of Nebraska signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance economic relations in the fields of trade, industry, services and investment; to facilitate increased involvement of the private sector in trade and commercial cooperation; and promote a favorable environment and complementary activities to encourage private sector investment between participants.
The long-term relationship Nebraska has built with the SME Center is paying off. Robert Cai,director of the Shanghai Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) Center for International Cooperation, has introduced many Chinese companies looking at trade and investment opportunities to Nebraska. SME sent officials and member companies to both the 2008 and 2011 Reverse Trade Missions in Nebraska.
One of the RTM attendees, Jingjing Lu, decided to open up an American subsidiary in Nebraska. Ms. Lu’s publicly-listed Sichuan New Hope Agribusiness Company is a subsidiary of New Hope, China’s largest privately-owned agricultural conglomerate.
Creation of the first trade office in China also took a giant step toward demonstrating continued goodwill and development of Nebraska-China relations. DED is financially supporting the office with the SME subsidizing a portion of it. Similar to the Japanese office, DED will oversee all office activities and budgetary issues. JZW International, specifically consultant Jennifer Zhang—DED’s contracted representative, will continue to help build relationships between Nebraska and China, and the Nebraska Center China will expand on her efforts in China.
The Shanghai-based Nebraska Center China will serve as a gateway for companies entering or expanding in China and will be the key entity for attracting Chinese investment into the state.
The trade office will be able to help identify international business partners, recruit Chinese companies, promote Nebraska companies’ products and services, facilitate meetings and communication, provide counsel related to the China market, establish a network of business contacts, and assist with initial and valuable follow-up communication.

ReinCoat Celebrates Opening of New Galvanizing Facility ReinCoat, LLC, a division of Reinke Manufacturing Company, Inc., celebrated the opening of its new 35,000 sq.-ft., state-of-the-art galvanizing facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony at Reinke headquarters in Deshler, Neb. Reinke President Chris Roth and company employees welcomed members of the Reinke family, area Thayer County officials and state dignitaries including Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith and Nebraska State Senator and U.S. Senate candidate Deb Fischer to the afternoon event. “With the design and construction focused on environmental and energy efficiencies, we are proud to showcase one of the most advanced production galvanizing facilities in the United States,” said Roth. “Enhancing our manufacturing capabilities and our level of expertise for the customers we serve is always top of mind for us, and we are excited to begin galvanizing operations under our ReinCoat division.” Completion of the new facility allows Reinke to bring all of its galvanizing operations on-site under its ReinCoat division. The automation capabilities and environmentally-friendly attributes incorporated into the design makes the facility one of the most advanced in the nation. Currently, 14 employees are working in the new facility with plans to add an approximate total of 35 employees when the facility becomes fully operational on all shifts.
ScanMed Closes $1.2 Million Financing Round
ScanMed, an industry leader in MRI coil technology, has announced the closing of a $1.2 million investment round. The round was led and partially funded by Invest Nebraska Corporation. The company will use the funding to support expansion in the U.S. and abroad, enhance sales and business development efforts, build additional partnerships, and create jobs. With this deal Invest Nebraska CEO Mark Crawford will be joining ScanMed’s Board of Directors. ScanMed services any MRI coil produced worldwide. In addition, the company manufactures anatomically specific coils for specialized MRI systems. Coils are critical pieces of MRI hardware, producing the magnetic field required for the image. ScanMed is primed to continue their record growth which has doubled in each of the past two years.
“Over the past two years, I’ve gone from tinkering with MRI coils in my basement with two other employees, to leased office space in West Omaha and 20 employees. The investment gives ScanMed the means to fuel expansion, allowing us to meet demand” remarked Dr. Randall Jones Ph.D., ScanMed’s Founder and CEO.
Invest Nebraska’s investment in ScanMed will accelerate the company’s R&D efforts allowing them to continue their current success of establishing and expanding industry partnerships.

U.S. Cold Storage Breaks Ground for $20 Million South Omaha Plant
U.S. Cold Storage broke ground for a new building that will have 40 percent more storage space for frozen and refrigerated foods than its present South Omaha plant.
When the 3.5 million cubic-foot cold storage building is up and running the existing 2.5 million cubic-foot plant at the same site, 4302 S. 30th St., will be demolished. Target date for completing the new plant is September 2013, with a projected cost of $20 million.
Besides more space, the new plant will have state of the art technology that will save energy and increase efficiency.
Getting more storage space, quickening the freezing process and speeding up the handling of stored goods through advanced computer-driven management systems are intended to drive an increase in business, said Dan Goodhard, General Manager of the company in Omaha.
“We are committed to protecting and growing our market share here in the Midwest,” Goodhard said. Based on growth, the new plant will have room for expansion to 9 million cubic feet of refrigerated and frozen storage space. That second phase of expansion would also mean a rather substantial increase in employment at the plant, which now has 25 workers, Goodhard said. U.S. Cold Storage has been in South Omaha since September 1952. The company also has a plant in west Omaha at 10711 Olive St. Both sites have easy access to Interstate highways and railroad lines that allow rapid distribution of products around the country from Omaha’s central location.

Alexander Payne to begin filming "Nebraska" in October
DED’s Nebraska Film Office announced that native Nebraskan Alexander Payne will begin filming his next feature film titled "Nebraska" in the state in October. Produced by Bona Fide Productions and released by Paramount Pictures, the film stars Bruce Dern and Bill Forte. The road picture is the story of a father and estranged son on a journey from Montana to claim winnings from a sweepstakes ticket in Lincoln, Neb.
Laurie Richards, DED’s Film Officer, has been identifying locations across the state for the project, while DED staff and other contacts statewide have been instrumental in this quest.
Two-time academy award winner, director and writer, Payne is famous for three previous films shot here, Citizen Ruth, Election and About Schmidt.
Filming will begin in October in northeast Nebraska, Lincoln, and several other key locations across the state.
"Alexander is a huge fan of Nebraska, the small towns, the unique landscape and environs. He is also hoping to hire local crew and actors,” said Richards. “The economic impact is huge and the soft spinoff of tourism is palpable.”
Save the Date for DED’s Briefing
Get Nebraska’s latest on economic development at the free 2012 briefing hosted by DED, to be held Wednesday, December 5, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (CT) in Lincoln at the State Capitol. Lunch will be provided by the Nebraska Public Power District.
DED will host only one briefing in 2012, and is geared to new economic developers and others interested in economic development programs and services. DED staff talks about components that make up the state’s economic growth and development, including existing business retention and expansion, housing, community development, and innovation and entrepreneurship.
Programming Changes at DED
This past legislative session brought changes to the DED programming and budget structure. As of July 1, LB 1053 created the Nebraska Tourism Commission and transferred powers and duties of the Travel and Tourism Division from DED. The Tourism Commission is now located on the first floor of the Nebraska State Office Building.
Also, LB 968 moved funds within DED from the Rural Development Commission (RDC) to the Business Innovation Act, thus eliminating funds for staffing the RDC.

ALMOST, MAINE
The Lofte Community Theatre is now showing "Almost, Maine". This show originally opened off-Broadway in the winter of 2005. The play was, and continues to be, wildly praised for its smart, funny take on life and love in a small mythical town in far northern Maine. On a cold, clear moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the sky above the town's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and sometimes hilarious ways. Almost everything is mended in this delightful midwinter night's dream.
Directed by Kevin Colbert, the large cast includes Mark Raffety, Benjiman Pettiford, and Kaitlin Scates of Omaha; Marikita Saure, Cory Misek, Shelia Hansen-Snell, Brenna Thompson, Samantha Colbert and Mat Pegler of Lincoln; Jennifer Harvey, Mark Santee and Melinda Mead of Plattsmouth; Megan Homan of Springfield; Danielle Black of Papillion and Josh Smith of Bellevue.
