2012-08-08 Rainbow_at_Murray

After a beautiful, much-needed, evening shower on August 8th, a big double rainbow tied up the eastern sky.  By the time I got home and got my camera, this was about all that I could capture of it, with the Murray water tower to the left.

A little while later, the setting sun reddened the summer sky.

To the west of Highway 75, at the old Webster Blvd overpass, stands this majestic tree.  I hope the new highway construction respects this giant and that it's allowed to grace the surrounding countryside for many years to come.

COUGAR HOLLOW

 A NEW,  EXCITING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT!

Many special volunteers have been busy this summer installing the outdoor classroom, Cougar Hollow, at Conestoga elementary School.   Goals for the classroom include providing learning experiences throughout the entire environment for both children and adults.

CougarHollow1

This unique classroom is one where math, science, music, art, physical education, history and social studies co-exist and will be used for both play and classroom time.  Fourteen trees and over 100 grasses have been planted.  There is a handicap accessible path, stamped with animal footprints and tree leaf prints.  Weather-permitting, grass will be laid and building of a 30' x 30' stage area for play and classroom time will begin soon.

The outdoor classroom still needs some financial support and sponsorship from local businesses and individuals.

16th ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE

This historical, hysterical event will take place on Sunday, October 14, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse.  In the Open Division, fiddlers will play a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice.  There will also be other divisions of competition available for the adventurous fiddlers,  including a Singing Fiddler's Contest, a Twin Fiddler's Contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's Contest (fiddle tunes played on any instrument other than a fiddle), and a Hocus-Pocus Contest (cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc.), which will give fiddlers an opportunity to play tunes that are usually not allowed in any other contest.

The prizes for the winners in the Open Division are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place.  Prizes will also be awarded for 1st place in the other contests.

Contestants can register online:

Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students, and $1.00 for children.

Fiddlers and their back-ups are admitted for free.
