CONESTOGA DISTRICT 56 STUDENTS
FUN at the FAIR!
Angela Stevens shared some fun photos of her son, Zack's, trip to the Cass County Fair.
Please send us some of your favorite fair shots, too!

Looks like I'm gonna have a BIG job to do!
Mom, you didn't tell me elephants can fly!
What? He's gonna grow up to be how big?

A trip to the fair isn't complete without a treat of cotton candy!
For a first-timer, Zack looks like a pro mutton-buster!

Hildegard Center for the Arts, in collaboration with Corporate Sponsor Saint Elizabeth Regional
Medical Center, the Nebraska Humanities Council, Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Arts Are Basic
and Marcus Lincoln Grand Cinemas, has launched an inspiring 2012-2013 educational project for
children in grades 6-12 in Southeast Nebraska called Heroes Among Us. At a time when our youth
are bombarded with images that are less than heroic, Heroes Among Us will give students unique
and creative opportunities to explore the concept of heroes. They’ll be invited to distinguish between
heroes and people who are simply famous, to look for positive and heroic role models in their own
community and to ultimately discover the “hero within”. Competitions in writing, the visual arts and
short-film will be offered. Students will have the chance to see their writings published in a book, their
art exhibited in the Lincoln County City Building and their Short-Films premiered publically at the
Marcus Theatres-Lincoln Grand Cinema. All students in grades 6-12 within a 50-mile radius of
Lincoln (LPS, private and home-schools) are invited to participate in the Heroes Among Us com-
petitions. Guidelines and details for the various competitions are posted on the Hildegard Center
for the Arts website
In addition, Hildegard Center for the Art has designed a series of lesson plans (K-12) using National
Standards for educators who plan to teach curriculum about heroes in the upcoming 2012-2013
school year. The lesson plans are posted on Hildegard’s website and are available “free of charge”
for immediate download at www.hildegardcenter.org as a gift to teachers and students. Local govern-
ment officials and public libraries have also been invited to take a “Hero’s Pledge” and promote the
recognition of heroism in the community.
Another life-changing component to Heroes Among Us is a special outreach workshop project for “
at-risk” children. Through a $5,000 grant from the Nebraska Humanities Council earmarked for work-
shop teacher salaries, and a $20,000 dollar corporate sponsorship from St. Elizabeth Regional
Medical Center, sixty-six individual workshop sessions are scheduled for Cedars Youth Services,
Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach, People’s City Mission and Lighthouse. These workshops will
provide sites with valuable resources and teachers that will help impact the lives of children who are
facing monumental challenges.
The workshops begin in September, with master teachers Liz Shea-McCoy (visual arts) and Pippa
White (drama and language arts) using a variety of teaching methods to engage the children and to
bring them Heroes in stimulating, creative and educational ways. Since the circumstances of the
children are unique to each individual site, teachers’ White and Shea-McCoy have met with the dif-
ferent sites to discuss workshop content, logistics, and the needs and special circumstances of the
kids. They will look for opportunities to mentor children individually and all kids will be invited to sub-
mit entries for the three Heroes competitions.
It is estimated that more than 40,000 students in eleven counties will be potentially touched by
Heroes Among Us, with over 175 schools (as well as home-schools) receiving valuable resources.
Go to www.hildegardcenter.org to learn more about Heroes Among Us and learn how to get schools
in your area involved. The Project Chair for Heroes Among Us is Anne Woita. She can be contacted
Heroes Among Us is just one of many exciting Time for Heroes projects at Hildegard Center for the
Arts that plan to celebrate heroes throughout the 2012-2013 year. Don’t miss the Hildegard spon-
sored tour at Wyuka Cemetery “Hearing from Heroes; A Theatrical Tour at Wyuka Cemetery,
October 21, 2012, 2-4pm. This tour will feature the talented Lincoln High School Theater Department
under the direction of Chris Maly, and Lincoln historian Ed Zimmer. Hildegard Center for the Arts is
also bringing to Lincoln Dr. Charles Smith, author of “Raising Courageous Kids”. Dr. Smith will be
teaching a class for kids “at risk” at Clinton’s CLC and will give a “free” public lecture on November
13, 2012. In addition, HCFA is planning a special Hildegard celebration honoring Saint Hildegard
at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 1-3pm. This event will celebrate
Hildegard Center for the Arts namesake, Hildegard von Bingen and her recent canonization May 10,
2012. Pope Benedict the XVI also plans to appoint St. Hildegard as a Doctor of the Church October
7, 2012. Go to www.hildegardcenter.org to learn more about these and other projects that support
Hildegard’s mission to “unite people of all beliefs, cultures and traditions to inspire humanity through
the Arts.”

The American Red Cross Reminds Donors
of
One More Summer Destination – A Blood Drive
As summer winds down, the hustle and bustle of families falling back into school and work routines begin. The American Red Cross reminds eligible donors to keep blood donation in their routine and add “help save lives” to their to-do lists. At least three extra donors at all August blood drives, above what’s currently expected, are critically needed for the Red Cross to readily meet hospital and patient needs this month and into the fall.
Eligible donors can give blood every 56 days, yet the average blood donor gives blood less than two times per year. Help the Red Cross ensure an adequate blood supply leading into the Labor Day holiday weekend by making an appointment to donate blood.
The American Red Cross Live Life. Give Life. summer-long campaign is helping to raise awareness about the constant need for blood and encourage regular donations. Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin to learn how to win one of many GiftCertificates.com prize packages.
How to Donate Blood
Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
About the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or join our blog at blog.redcross.org.
