Sometimes you have to get inventive when trying to cool off outside.  At a baseball game someone dumped ice in some mulch near a tree and I just couldn't resist sticking my iced tea cup in it...and my feet!

Cass County Fair 4-H Auction Supporters (family, friends, businesses, alumni) are invited to show support for Cass County 4-Hers by attending one of two 4-H auctions held during
the Cass County Fair.

The 4-H cake auction starts at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening August 7, at the open air auditorium on the Cass County fairgrounds.  It provides an opportunity to purchase fancy or decorated cakes, pies, and/or specialty breads baked and decorated by 4-H members.  The proceeds of this event will be divided between the participating 4-Her and the Cass County 4-H Council.  4-H Council funds raised at this event help sponsor activities for 4-H members throughout the year.  Auction supporters are invited to stay for the Fashion Show/Awards program following the auction.  A Sneak Peek and Refreshments will be held for everyone at the 4-H Building following this event.

The 4-H Livestock Auction starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, August 12, in the livestock barn.  Livestock judging awards will be presented to the 4-Hers before the auction at 2:45 p.m.   The Cass County 4-H Council clerks this premium sale which is held for market animals only.  Each exhibitor is allowed to sell one animal of each species as premium only, meaning dollars per head not cents per pound.  Exhibitors retaining ownership will only receive the premium from the sale.  Exhibitors of shipped animals will receive the premium from the buyer in addition to the sale proceeds from the buyer of the animal.

The Annual Call for Legislative Page Applications

August 3, 2012, Lincoln—Every year the legislature is supported by a group of bright and energetic college students. The students are selected to serve as legislative pages. Pages are often interested in or curious  about state government. Some have gone on to become state senators, while many others have continued to work in the public sector after they graduate from college.

Pages perform valuable services for the legislature, such as helping with preparations for public hearings, assisting senators during committee meetings, and monitoring procedural issues and controlling microphones in the Chamber during floor debate. I was delighted to meet and work with the pages for the first time this year. They clearly have a great opportunity to learn about our legislative process and receive a real insider’s perspective on how the Nebraska Legislature conducts its business. While performing their important duties, I observed that the pages still have a lot of fun and talk about the friendships they develop.

The deadline for submitting page applications and letters of recommendation for the 2013 legislative session is Friday, September 28th at 5:00 pm. The Page Selection Committee will meet in mid-October to choose individuals to fill the vacant positions. Pages work four-hour shifts and must be able to work 20 hours a week during the session. The 2013, 90-day session will begin on January 7h and continue through early June.  The hourly wage for first-year pages will be approximately $9.50 per hour, and returnees will be paid $9.85 per hour. In many instances pages may be eligible to receive college credits for their legislative service.

If you are a full-time Nebraska college student with at least a 2.5 grade point average and would like to learn more about becoming a page for the Nebraska Legislature, please contact Kitty Kearns at (402) 471-2304 or send her an email at kkearns@leg.ne.gov You may also contact my office, and we will be happy to send an application form to you.

The Selection Committee chose a student page from the second legislative district in four of the past six years. I would be very proud to see another page from our district on the floor of the legislature during the 2013 session.

I am always interested in hearing your comments by mail, phone or email.

The American Red Cross Reminds Donors

of

One More Summer Destination – A Blood Drive

As summer winds down, the hustle and bustle of families falling back into school and work routines begin. The American Red Cross reminds eligible donors to keep blood donation in their routine and add “help save lives” to their to-do lists. At least three extra donors at all August blood drives, above what’s currently expected, are critically needed for the Red Cross to readily meet hospital and patient needs this month and into the fall.

Eligible donors can give blood every 56 days, yet the average blood donor gives blood less than two times per year. Help the Red Cross ensure an adequate blood supply leading into the Labor Day holiday weekend by making an appointment to donate blood.

The American Red Cross Live Life. Give Life. summer-long campaign is helping to raise awareness about the constant need for blood and encourage regular donations. Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin to learn how to win one of many GiftCertificates.com prize packages.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or join our blog at blog.redcross.org.
