Children's Theater Event at Lofte a Success

The Missoula Children's Theater residency at the Lofte Community Theatre last week was a resounding success.  In all, 110 children auditioned for the play.  This is a new record for area children wanting to take part in the week-long theater event.  After auditions, 58 children were cast to present the classic tale, "Hansel & Gretel."

Starring in the title roles were Dawson Hogue of Murray (playing Hansel) and Madeline Schmit of Lincoln (playing Gretel).  The Wildwood Witch was played by Carson Santee of Plattsmouth.  Other children participating in the play are listed below by their town of residence.

The Lofte thanks Home State Bank and Plattsmouth State Bank for their continued sponsorship of this marvelous event.  Missoula Children's Theater is a non-profit organization based out of Missoula, Montana which works to help the development of life skills for children through the participation of the performing arts.

SARPY CASS_HEALTH_WELLNESS

Five Seconds Could Save the Life of a Child

Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass Reminds Parents to

Spot Their Tot Before Starting the Engine

Summer is here and everyone is in a rush to get to the store before it closes or in the frenzy of trying to get to the ballgame before that first pitch. The focus is often on where  we are destined – not what is around the car. Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass encourages anyone  driving a car to walk completely around it to check for children before getting in and starting  the engine. This applies even to drivers who do not have children but may have kids in the  neighborhood. These incidences are known as “backovers”or “frontovers,” depending on  direction. Nebraska has been in the headlines with three tragic “backover/frontover” incidences  in the last 30 days, all of the drivers were family members of the victims.

 · June 7, a 21 month-old girl in Lincoln,” backover”.
· June 13, a 2 year-old boy in Fremont, “frontover”.
· June 18, a 2 year-old girl in Lincoln, “backover”.

“We believe these injuries and deaths are preventable as too many result from a driver not seeing children who might be playing, running after or standing near their vehicle,” says Jane Husz, Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass coordinator. “What is truly tragic about these stories is that often, the drivers are friends or even family members.”  Back-over deaths are the worst possible scenario. Many times they involve a parent running over their child.

Government Statistics reveal
· 228 people of all ages die each year from back-over accidents.
· 44% of all these fatalities are under the age of 5.
· Each year, 17,000 people are injured in back?over accidents.

Automobile makers will be required to put back-up cameras in all passenger vehicles by 2014 thanks to a rulemaking by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Currently,  in 2012, 45% of vehicles offer a rearview camera as standard equipment. This was proposed by  NHTSA in 2010. This is a big step to protect pedestrians, especially children. Safe Kids agrees with AAA's warning that "motorists who have vehicles equipped with this technology to use it to supplement, not replace, traditional efforts to turn and check blind spots (both rear and lateral) while backing up." Usually you think of SUV's and trucks when you think of back-over accidents, but some of the biggest blind spots are on passenger cars that the driver sits low and have a high trunk deck. Some blind spots can be over 100 feet long.

Safe Kids incorporates a back-up camera in its Spot The Tot presentations for the public. These
presentations show parents how to avoid back?over, front?over incidents and include information
on rearview cameras. These presentations are free to parent groups in Sarpy and Cass Counties.
Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass is able to include information on the back?up camera due to a donation
of a back-up camera and installation from AAA Cornhusker Motorclub.  Parents and caregivers
can follow these tips to help make sure that children remain safe around cars:

· Before getting in the car and starting the engine – walk all the way around the parked vehicle to make sure children are not under or behind it. When possible, engage older kids as helpers to accomplish this.
· Ensure that young children are always accompanied by an adult when getting in and out of a vehicle.
· Identify a safe play area for children to use far away from parked or moving vehicles.
· Identify a safe spot for children to go when nearby vehicles are about to move.
· When walking near moving vehicles, in driveways, in parking lots, or on sidewalks – make sure to
firmly hold the hand of each child that is with you.
· Avoid using driveways as play areas if moving cars have access entering or exiting these areas.
· Pay close attention to cameras or sensors available in many vehicles when backing, but
remember these tools should be used in conjunction with the five-second walk around.

“No matter how important it is at that moment for you to get to your destination on time,” says Jane Husz, “taking a five-second walk around your car to make sure that children are not in harm’s way could save your family and your child from a lifetime of physical and emotional pain.”

Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass works to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death
and disability to children under the age of 14. Safe Kids Sarpy/Cass is a member of Safe Kids
Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing unintentional injury. Safe
Kids Sarpy/Cass was founded in 2006 and is led by Sarpy/Cass Dept of Health and Wellness.

Help Spark the American Red Cross

Blood Supply this Summer

While the Independence Day holiday will surely ignite many spectacular fireworks extravaganzas, the American Red Cross is counting on donors to spark the nation’s blood supply. The Red Cross reminds eligible donors that the need for blood is constant, especially during holiday timeframes – like Independence Day – when eligible donors have even less time in their busy schedules to give.

While all blood types are needed during the summer months, O negative, B negative and A negative blood types are currently in high demand because they potentially can be transfused to patients with Rh positive or Rh negative blood types. Type O negative, the universal blood type, can potentially be transfused to patients with any blood type.

The American Red Cross encourages all eligible donors to donate blood regularly this summer to ensure an adequate blood supply for patients in need.

The American Red Cross’ Live Life. Give Life. summer-long campaign is helping to raise awareness aboutthe constant need for blood and encourage regular donations. Presenting donors between May 21 and September 5, 2012 will be entered automatically into the Live Life. Give Life. promotion for a chance to win prize packages from GiftCertificates.com. And, from June 29 to July 8, presenting donors will be entered to win additional prize certificates to thank them for giving blood around the Independence Day holiday. Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin to learn more.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PROMOTION

As a special 'thank you' around the Independence Day holiday, presenting donors between June 29 and July 8, 2012, can register to win a prize certificate redeemable at GiftCertificates.com.  Visit redcrossblood.org/GiveWin for details.

How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. BEN NELSON

Senator Nelson's E-Update
June 22, 2012

2012 Farm Bill Sets New Course for American Agriculture

Yesterday, my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle came together to pass the 2012 Farm Bill, setting a strong course for American agriculture and ushering in a new era for Nebraska farmers and ranchers.

The bill's budget-minded reforms, and swapping of government subsidies for new crop insurance programs, will benefit Nebraska's more than 47,000 farms while strengthening the safety net for tough times. It will also bring stability and job security to tens of thousands of Nebraska agricultural workers, paving the way for job growth in our state's agriculture sector, while at the same time reducing the federal deficit by $23 billion.

Also included in the bill are several amendments I authored that will give more security to rural communities and provide peace of mind to those Nebraskans who have been particularly hard-hit by this recession. My amendment on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development Loan will extend the current grandfather clause to allow many Nebraska cities such as Columbus and Norfolk to remain eligible for USDA Rural Development Housing Loans. Additionally, my amendment on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will create more accountability by requiring states to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and program integrity of SNAP.

I'm proud of what was accomplished by the Senate, not only for Nebraska, but for the future of American agriculture. I'm hopeful the House will act quickly, too, because Congress should approve a new Farm Bill that's good for farmers and taxpayers this year.
