"OUTDOOR CLASSROOM"

 COMMUNITY PROJECT

Every few years, the Conestoga Elementary PTO focuses on a major project.  Our PTO was enlightened by research revealing the necessity of contact with nature for a healthy child.  We learned that time in nature inspires creativity, reduces stress, improves test scores, health concentration, behavior, reduces obesity, depression, attention deficit disorder while promoting humility and connection.  With the help of students, parents, staff and the community, our PTO has been raising and saving money for the past two years towards this community project.   We are now ready to break ground and are looking to the community to help fulfill our vision.  The following is a list of needed resources and volunteers:

  • help to remove broken concrete from the school/do you have a place we can put this concrete (not much)
  • pick-ups and drivers to haul and unload dirt, mulch and sand
  • donations of cut or fallen hardwood trees (oak, walnut, ash and hackberry preferred)  2' - 4' in diameter.  These trees will be used to line the entrance as well as provide natural seating, stepping stones and enclose areas.
  • help to plant trees, shrubs and flowers
  • donations of used tractor tires for a "hill of tires" planted in sand
  • brick pavers or cobblestone to be used as the floor to the entrance of the classroom
  • boulders - we will be building a bridge over a currently hazardous drainage area and would like to install boulders around it for kids to climb
  • construction experience or willingness to help build a stage area and bridge
  • framer - we are looking for a framer to help put up the facade of a school which will provide the backdrop to our stage.  We envision this to be wrapped in siding, so will also need siding installation experience.
  • concrete - we will be seeking bids for concrete to connect the areas within the classroom.  We are interested in part of this path being stamped with animal footprints.

  • Do you need help envisioning such a classroom?  Please visit the following site to view an outdoor classroom in South Omaha:  http://www.ops.org/elementary/gomezheritage/OutdoorClassroom/tabid/250/Default.aspx

If you have any of these items on your property and would be willing to donate them or if you are interested in donating your time and talent, we can make our dream come true!  If you would like to see the professional drawings of this classroom or to get involved, please contact Allison Welch at 402-235-2539 or email me at  allisonwelch@windstream.net

    Violin-Fiddle

The Schoolhouse Performance Series will feature championship fiddler, Deborah Greenblatt, and multi-instrumentalist, David Seay performing "Fiddle Fables" on Sunday, May 13, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska.

With the help of her fabulous five-string fiddle, and some talented fiddle students, Deborah Greenblatt       explores some of the trials, tribulations, and lessons that fiddlers and other musicians often have in common. There is advice for the beginner ("It Starts With Your Feet"), advice for the fiddler's families ("Have Mercy"), for the growing fiddler ("Shopping For a Fiddle Blues"), for the brave fiddler ("I'm Gonna Fiddle In a Contest"), as well as the fiddler who plays the viola ("Out of Fiddle, Out of My Mind"). There are also inspiring stories of real-life fiddlers ("Cactus Pete"), teachers ("Alice Johnson' and students ("Mary Ann the Fiddler").

The concert will be followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and even jam with the performers. Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students & seniors, and $1.00 for children.      LB 357 Offers Choices for Local Voters

April 13, 2012, Lincoln— Much has been reported about LB 357 – the sales tax proposal adopted
this month by the legislature. While descriptions of the measure have been reasonably accurate,
specific details about what LB 357 would really provide may still be unclear. I want to outline some
important facts about the bill that are the basis of my decision to support its passage.

LB 357 would give local voters the right to decide whether their city, town or village should have
additional funds for a clearly identified project. As a lifelong resident of District 2, I have complete
trust in your judgment and believe you should have the right to make decisions about the needs of
    your community.
LB 357 would provide an additional tool for strengthening infrastructure or creating a new community
improvement project, but the tool could only be used if voters approve it.

Passage of LB 357 is not an automatic tax increase. Instead, it gives local voters a real voice in
deciding whether to increase their community's sales tax by up to 0.5 cents. Under the bill the local
governing body would have to agree, by a super-majority of at least 70 percent of its elected members,
to put a project proposal on the ballot. A community conversation would take place, and voters would
then accept or reject the percentage increase to fund the project for which the tax would be dedicated.

“Local Option” is a term used to describe the freedom of a local political jurisdiction, such as a city,
town or village, to decide certain issues within its borders by popular vote. The current maximum rate
for Nebraska's local option sales tax has not changed in over a quarter of a century. The legislature
granted Omaha the maximum rate 34 years ago, and Lincoln received the same right seven years
later. Twenty-six years ago in 1986, first and second class cities, and villages were finally allowed
to use the current maximum local option sales tax rate of 1.5 percent.

Of the 530 municipalities in Nebraska, 194 have a voter approved local option sales tax. Eighty-seven
of the 194 are currently at the 1.5 percent maximum rate. Without financial resources municipalities
cannot fund public infrastructure and economic development projects to create and sustain a quality
of life that is likely to retain current residents and attract new ones.

Under LB 357 Omaha and Lincoln would be required to designate proceeds from any increased sales
tax revenue to projects finished under inter local agreements. Each of these two large cities would have
additional criteria to meet when using any revenue derived from the voter approved sales tax percentage
    increase.

Cities of the first and second class, and villages would be required to dedicate all increased sales tax
revenue to fund public infrastructure projects.

If voters approve an increase in the local option sales tax, the increase would be required to sunset - or
expire - in ten years. If the increased revenue was dedicated to paying bonds for an infrastructure project,
the tax would terminate once the bonds were paid.

Local elected officials from more than 18 communities in District 2 and across the state have contacted
me supporting LB 357. The bill is seen by these community leaders as a vital new economic tool. Some
told me LB 357 could be used for urgently needed projects such as water system improvements, law
enforcement centers, hospitals, sidewalks and libraries. Others said they don't have an existing plan for
LB 357, but the bill would offer an increased sense of security. Several years of reduced or eliminated
state and federal funding, plus continuing “unfunded mandates,” have made it extremely difficult for cities,
towns and villages in this state to work on essential infrastructure and economic development projects.

The critical piece of LB 357 for me was the provision requiring the approval by local voters. Is there anyone
better able to make this decision? I think not. That is why I support LB 357 to give you the right to make
    choices for your own community.

I am always interested in hearing your comments by mail, phone or email.

Celebrate National Volunteer Week by Donating Blood

This National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, the American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make an appointment to donate and help save lives. Approximately every two seconds a patient in the United States needs a blood transfusion. Thanks to volunteer blood donors, the Red Cross is able to provide needed blood products to local hospitals and more than 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers around the country.

With blood products currently being delivered to hospitals as quickly as they are coming in, the Red Cross needs donors to roll up a sleeve to ensure blood is there for patients whenever and wherever it is needed.

In the hour it takes to donate blood, donors can help save the lives of more than one patient. Only 3 percent of the U.S. population currently donates blood. Become a Red Cross volunteer donor and join a family of blood donors across the nation in a lifesaving cause.

    How to Donate Blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

    About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation's blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
