2012 Great Plains Growers Conference January 5th - 7th
The Great Plains Growers Conference will be held on January 5th , 6th and 7th, 2012 at the
Fulkerson Conference Center on the Missouri Western State University Campus in St. Joseph,
Missouri.
"Interesting and useful information will be presented on production and marketing of vegetables,
cut flowers and fruit," said Sarah Browning, University of Nebraska- Lincoln Extension Educator.
"It doesn't matter if you are an experienced commercial vegetable grower or someone with just
a dream about starting to grow and sell produce, there will be something for you," he/she said.
The conference and trade show is a collaborative effort of growers associations and extension
services from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota, and each year draws hun-
dreds of producers from our region and beyond.
On Thursday January 7th, the conference kicks off with five day long workshops that you can
choose from. A workshop on high tunnels features presentations by experienced, nationally re-
cognized grower educators, and research and extension specialists from our region. High tun-
nels provide critical crop protection and season extension. Come and hear the experiences of
seven different high tunnel growers plus an update on high tunnel research at Lincoln University.
Also on Thursday four experienced growers will present a day-long Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) mini-school, providing detailed information on all aspects starting and running
a CSA for direct marketing farm products. This year's conference will feature a Good Agriculture
Practices (GAPs)/Food Safety workshop. Come learn what GAPs is all about from an experienced grower and a USDA Program Manager who has been very active in the GAPs program. A fourth workshop will be for tree fruit growers. Weed management, new fruit tree varieties, white/bitter rot and GAPs and tree fruit will be covered. The topic for the fifth workshop is the basics of beekeeping in the Midwest. The instructors will cover all about the European honeybee, bee equipment, building, setting up and managing a hive.
Five concurrent sessions on Friday and Saturday January 8th and 9th provide a total of over 50
presentations on a wealth of subjects related to organic and conventional crop production, pro-
tection, risk management and marketing. In addition to presentations on vegetable production
and marketing, there will be tracks on small fruit, tree fruit, cut flowers, beginner and advanced
organic, marketing, agritourism and sessions on urban horticulture and community gardens.
"The trade show is a big draw for conference participants" said Tom Fowler, Buchanan County
Extension Specialist, "we had 50 booth spaces last year that filled the Fulkerson Conference Center
and expect the same this year," he added.
Registration, which includes meals and breaks, for the Thursday workshops is $50 -$60 depending
on the workshop selected and $35/day for Friday and Saturday sessions.
The conference is going to be held at the Fulkerson Conference Center on the Missouri Western

JANUARY is NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
American Red Cross thanks its committed blood donors for dedicating their time to give hope
to patients in need. Throughout the month of January, the American Red Cross is celebrating
the contributions of millions of blood donors who give patients hope.
Since 1970, National Blood Donor Month has been celebrated in an effort to educate Americans
about the importance of regular blood donation and the impact it can have on patients in need.
Help maintain a stable blood supply by becoming a dedicated donor and encouraging others
to give for the first time. Make an appointment today and join the nearly 4 million Red Cross
blood donors across the country dedicated to changing lives, one donation at a time.
How to Donate Blood
Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an
appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply
for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are
required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in
some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible
to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also
have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Free Commercial Property
The Village of Union, a municipal corporation located within Cass County, Nebraska, is requesting
solicitations from individuals and corporations to receive free commercial property located within
the Village of Union, with such property having a legal description of: South Union Lots 5, 6, 7 &
East 4'6 Lot 8, Block 2, in Union, Cass County, Nebraska, with a lot size of 72' x 135'. This
property is located on Main Street which is located on Highway 34 and just off the intersection of
Highway 75.
To be eligible to receive this free commercial property, the individual or corporation must send a
solicitation to the following address postmarked by April 1, 2012: Village of Union, Att: Village
Clerk, P.O. Box 127, Union, NE 68455. To receive this free property, the person/entity must
agree to do the following:
1. Remove and/or demolish the current structures on the premises or refurbish the current structure,
to include the south retaining wall, no later than October 1, 2012.
2. Place a commercial structure on the property no later than September 1, 2013.
The solicitation must, at a minimum, contain the following:
1. The name, address, and phone numbers of the individual or entity submitting the solicitation, to
include a description of the individual's/entity's current and past business ventures.
2. A detailed description of person's/entity's plans for such commercial property.
3. A letter of credit from a bank or lending institution that demonstrates the individual's or entity's
ability to receive financing to demolish the current site structures and place a commercial structure
on the property by September 1, 2013.
The Village Board of Trustees will create a committee to review the solicitations. A decision will
then be made by the Village Board of Trustee by May 1, 2012 to choose which solicitations, if any,
is in the best interest of the Village.
The Village will provide the individual or entity who is awarded the property the following by June 1,
2012:
1. A general conveyance deed with right of reverter to Village if commercial property is not con-
structed by September 1, 2013; and
2. Free sewer and water hookup.

"Dad's Christmas Miracle" Playing at Mahoney State Park
KBC Productions is partnering with Eugene T. Mahoney State Park for its 19th winter theater
season with the winter production of "Dad's Christmas Miracle"." Written by Pat Cook, this
funny and heart-warming story revolves around Connor Murphy (Dustin Reckling Louisville)
who wants a go-cart for Christmas. He and his pals, Tater (Peter Reckling Louisville) and
Neil (Matt Rothgeb, Omaha) try to get to the end of the school semester being good boys in
hopes of getting what they want for Christmas. However, report cards and the annual Christmas
Pageant stand in their way.
Hysterical situations abound in this loving memory of Yuletide charm back when if you had a
dollar it was more money than you knew what to do with; if you had an hour to play, it seemed
forever, and the best time in the whole world had to be Christmas. Artistic Director Kevin Colbert
says, "This is great fun for the whole family!"
Other cast members include: Doug Rothgeb, (Omaha), Dave and Hope Hibler, Keylee Ezell,
(Manley), Andrew DeBrie, Emma Gauthier and Brenda Jones (Louisville).
The production runs December 28, 29, 30.
Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30PM and Sundays are at 2PM.
