The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor the crops,
but the kind of man that the country turns out.

*UPDATE -
HEADS UP on MAILING HOLIDAY PACKAGES and CARDS!
A personal story here. I mailed a package from Murray to my cousin in Florida, on October 22, 2024. I checked the tracking number and found that it left Murray within 45 minutes. Great! Or so I thought. When I checked again on November 4th, it was still in Omaha! The package included some Halloween treats and some sentimental items that had belonged to our aunt who passed away last week. It saddens me to not know where these things are.
If you plan on using USPS to send holiday packages and correspondence, please see the preferred 'mail by' dates HERE. You don't want them to arrive late! By following these guidelines, your mail should reach its destination in plenty of time for the holidays. We can only hope.
*UPDATE ON the PACKAGE: Tracking the package, it was said to have arrived to its destination on Saturday, November 9th. However, as of this writing, Tuesday November 12th, it still has not arrived. My cousin, her daughter and granddaughter were there Saturday and received no package from me. So, it's still out there somewhere, maybe in Florida, but who knows?
BEWARE: Also on Saturday morning I received a text message saying it could not be delivered, however when I checked the tracking number with USPS, it was out for delivery. I called our local postmaster, Kathy, (she's great!) and was told that the USPS will NEVER send a TEXT message about your mail. It's a scam and the post office is working to find who is sending these out. Fair warning - if you also shop from your phone, and click on one of these phony texts, they can capture your payment information and use it nefariously.
(By the way, keep in mind that some postal facilities in Florida were affected by the hurricanes, which have, understandably caused some mail to be delayed.)
IT'S EASY.

The Conestoga Backpack Program continues to furnish food to local families in need. The program serves the Murray, Nehawka, Union and Beaver Lake areas in southeast Nebraska, and will not turn anyone away.
Just by adding a few of the items listed below to your shopping list and picking them up, you'll be helping someone in a big way. Keep in mind that some of the children are very young and are possibly 'preparing' their own meals, so easy-to-open containers are a good option for little hands.
Granola bars
Fruit snacks
Dry pasta
Spaghetti sauce
Dry soup mixes
Canned meat (chicken, tuna)
Boxed prepared meal kits (Hamburger Helper, Rice-a-Roni)
Peanut butter
Jelly
Canned fruit and vegetables
Also needed are hygienic supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, cotton swabs, tissues and toilet paper.
To make a monetary donation instead, a check made payable to 'CONESTOGA BACKPACK PROGRAM' may be mailed or deposited at Cornerstone Bank, 102 W Main St, Murray, NE 68409. 100% of all monies collected is used for food and hygienic supplies for the families.
To have the items picked up, call Jill at 402-660-3543 to make arrangements. As another alternative, you may drop them off at Cornerstone Bank in Murray or at their Beaver Lake location.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
NCTC PLANS HOLIDAY SHOPPING PROMOTIONS
Nebraska City Tourism & Promotions is once again partnering with local retailers to offer two holiday promotions to shoppers this season – “Shop Nebraska City First” and “Twelve Days of Christmas With Holli Day.”
“Shop Nebraska City First” was introduced in 2021 as a way to encourage shoppers to stay local when doing their holiday shopping. NCTC Executive Director Amy Allgood said the temptation to head to the big city to shop for Christmas gifts can be overwhelming this time of year.
“We know that 70% of every dollar spent locally stays local,” Allgood said. “Beyond the financial, shopping local benefits our neighbors and our community as a whole.”
This year “Shop Nebraska City First” starts November 11 and runs through December 1. With this promotion, for every $25 a shopper spends in a participating location, they will receive a Proof of Purchase voucher. Those vouchers are to be turned into Nebraska City Tourism & Commerce (806 1st Avenue) by the end of the day on Monday, December 2. On Tuesday, December 3, NCTC will go live on their Facebook page to draw winners for prize baskets provided by each of the participating locations. Last year, 17 local retailers participated in the promotion, and more than $62,000 in vouchers was collected at the end of the three-week event.
A complete list of participating retailers in the “Shop Nebraska City First” promotion will be announced on November 8.
The second holiday shopping promotion is “Twelve Days of Christmas with Holli Day.” This promotion is done almost entirely online.
“We premiered Holli in 2020 when people didn’t shop in person much due to COVID restrictions, but she’s been so popular that we keep bringing her back,” Allgood said.
On the twelve weekdays from December 5 through December 20, pictures of the NCTC Elf (Holli Day) visiting various businesses will be posted on the NCTC Facebook page. Each picture is accompanied by a short story and a question about that particular retailer. The public responds to the question in the Comments section and, at the end of each day, a random winner is chosen. That winner is invited to NCTC to select a customized snow globe fitted with a gift card.
A complete list of participating retailers in the “Twelve Days of Christmas with Holli Day” promotion will be announced on December 3.
COME ON OVER!
This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity. People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together. Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.

Dear Readers,
We want to build an online history about Murray.
Please submit any information you might know about our town to start creating this project.
If you own a business, let us know when you started and any informaton about the building and/or business located there before yours. Do you know the little gray building, CJ's Hair Salon, on Main Street used to be an ice cream shop? Do you also know that the Murray Christian Church used to be located just east of the Murray Repair Shop? In the early 1900's Murray's Main Street was devastated by a fire. Have you heard any information about that time that's been passed down from your ancestors?
You can also send information about your house - when it was built and any background about it. Was it one of the first homes in town? Is it haunted? What do you know about it? There's a little house in town that used to be the old railroad depot! Do you know where it is now, or that the old Murray Elementary School's mascot name was the Mustangs?
Any information would be helpful. Please send photos, too, if available! Photos should contain people's names and location and any other helpful information. This should become a fun, educational and informative piece of history that will continue to grow, and one that we're all building together! Thanks for your help!
