Condolences to the Family and Friends of...

Wesley "Wes" Joseph Blum

2025 12 24 Obit Wesley Joseph Blum

A new Murray resident, as of last summer, you might have seen Wesley walking one of his beloved dogs around town.  Sadly he passed away at Nebraska Medicine on December 8, 2025.

Wesley is survived by Amy Kimmet (best friend and girlfriend), and a pack of pups, Ace, Sasha, and Grayson. Grayson was his buddy. They took walks together and lots of drives. He’d walk to the Murray Bar for a drink and Grayson would wait outside. Wesley was an avid fisherman and loved to be out by the water as that was his happy place.

Per Wesley's request, there will be no service or celebration of life, so please honor him in your own way.  Maybe donate to a suicide prevention/mental health foundation, a pet shelter, have a drink in his memory at the Murray Bar or just carry a fond remembrance of him in your heart.

Deadline for Nebraska Letters About Literature Writing Contest Approaches

Nebraska students have one month left to submit their letter in the state-wide Letters About Literature reading and writing contest. Readers in grades 4-12 are invited to write a personal letter to an author for the Nebraska Letters about Literature (LAL) contest, a state reading and writing promotion program. The letter can be to any author (living or dead) from any genre- fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic-explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s view of the world. Submissions must be completed online by the end of the day December 31, 2025. Nebraska Letters About Literature is coordinated and sponsored by the Nebraska Center for the Book and the Nebraska Library Commission, with support from Lincoln City Libraries, Francie & Finch Bookshop, and Humanities Nebraska.

The Nebraska Center for the Book’s panel of judges will select a winner and an honorable mention per competition level (Level I for grades 4-6, Level II for grades 7-8, and Level III for grades 9-12) to be honored in a proclamation-signing ceremony at the state capitol during National Library Week in April 2026. Their winning letters will be placed in the Jane Pope Geske Heritage Room of Nebraska Authors at Bennett Martin Public Library in Lincoln. Nebraska winners and honorable mentions will receive state prizes.

Teachers, librarians, and parents can download the contest guidelines, free teaching materials, information on the online entry system, and past winning letters on the Nebraska Center for the Book website. An informational NCompass Live webinar aired on October 1st, discussing this year’s contest, the submission process, and judging criteria. For more information contact Nebraska Center for the Book.

The Nebraska Center for the Book is housed at the Nebraska Library Commission and brings together the state’s readers, writers, booksellers, librarians, publishers, printers, educators, and scholars to build the community of the book, supporting programs to celebrate and stimulate public interest in books, reading, and the written word. The Nebraska Center for the Book is supported by the national Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and the Nebraska Library Commission.

As the state library agency, the Nebraska Library Commission is an advocate for the library and information needs of all Nebraskans. The mission of the Library Commission is statewide promotion, development, and coordination of library and information services, “bringing together people and information.”

2023 09 06 KIDS EATING 1

The Conestoga Backpack Program continues to furnish food to local families in need. The program serves the Murray, Nehawka, Union and Beaver Lake areas in southeast Nebraska, and will not turn anyone away.

Just by adding a few of the items listed below to your shopping list and picking them up, you'll be helping someone in a big way. Keep in mind that some of the children are very young and are possibly 'preparing' their own meals, so easy-to-open containers are a good option for little hands.
Canned soup
Granola bars
Fruit snacks
Dry pasta
Spaghetti sauce
Dry soup mixes
Canned meat (chicken, tuna)
Boxed prepared meal kits (Hamburger Helper, Rice-a-Roni)
Peanut butter
Jelly
Canned fruit and vegetables
Single-serve cereals
Also needed are hygienic supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, cotton swabs, tissues and toilet paper.
To make a monetary donation instead, a check made payable to 'CONESTOGA BACKPACK PROGRAM' may be mailed or deposited at Cornerstone Bank, 102 W Main St, Murray, NE 68409. 100% of all monies collected is used for food and hygienic supplies for the families.
To have the items picked up, call Jill at 402-660-3543 to make arrangements. As another alternative, you may drop them off at Cornerstone Bank in Murray or at their Beaver Lake location.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

2025 12 24 PLT T.E.A.M. Tobacco Free 1

City of Plattsmouth Passes Tobacco-Free Resolution

Plattsmouth became the largest city in Cass County Community to implement a comprehensive tobacco-free city owned policy on November 17th when their city council voted 6-1 to adopt Resolution 25-012 . This policy follows similar ones that have been enacted in Eagle, Elmwood, Greenwood, Louisville, Manley, Murray, & Weeping Water. Gretna and Springfield in neighboring Sarpy County also have comprehensive policies.

Whereas the use and exposure to tobacco products and tobacco smoke are related to adverse health risks; and whereas restricting the use of tobacco products in outdoor areas which are City of Plattsmouth owned is intended to protect and promote the health, safety, and welfare of community residents, particularly community children and youth. All City of Plattsmouth recreational areas, parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, community center,
senior center, waterpark, and library shall be posted with tobacco-free signs.

For the purposes of this City of Plattsmouth Resolution No. 25-012, tobacco means any tobacco

products, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems, vaping systems and products, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette type products, alternative nicotine products, tobacco product look-a-likes, and products intended to replicate tobacco products either by appearance or effect.

R. Paul Lambert, City of Plattsmouth Mayor stated, “Recently, the City Council approved a resolution creating smoke-free spaces for the City of Plattsmouth including public parks and other designated areas like the Library, Senior Center and Community Center. As Mayor, I support the effort of creating smoke-free parks and public spaces. Smoke-free areas are an investment in the health of our community and especially, our children. When our public spaces are clean and safe, our youth can play, learn, and grow in an environment that supports their well-being and their future. Our youth deserve every opportunity to grow strong and healthy. Choosing not to smoke isn’t just a personal decision—it’s a commitment to a brighter future for themselves, their families, and our entire community.”

“I applaud the City of Plattsmouth and their leaders for taking steps to support changing the social norm of tobacco use community spaces. In places primarily targeted towards youth like playgrounds, parks, and community centers - tobacco has no place. As a former tobacco user myself, I have found that no user wants their child to ever start - and the less our kids see tobacco use in these spaces, the better.” said Autumn Sky Burns, Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands (T.E.A.M.) Community Health Coordinator.

T.E.A.M. offers support to tobacco-users in Cass County who want to quit or reduce their usage. You can order a free tobacco “quit kit” by visiting www.teamtobaccofree.org/cessation.

For more information about tobacco-free policies email info@TEAMTobaccoFree.org.

Dear Readers,

We want to build an online history about Murray.
Please submit any information you might know about our town to start creating this project.

If you own a business, let us know when you started and any informaton about the building and/or business located there before yours. Do you know the little gray building, CJ's Hair Salon, on Main Street used to be an ice cream shop?  Do you also know that the Murray Christian Church used to be located just east of the Murray Repair Shop?  In the early 1900's Murray's Main Street was devastated by a fire.  Have you heard any information about that time that's been passed down from your ancestors?

You can also send information about your house - when it was built and any background about it. Was it one of the first homes in town? Is it haunted? What do you know about it?  There's a little house in town that used to be the old railroad depot!  Do you know where it is now, or that the old Murray Elementary School's mascot name was the Mustangs?

Any information would be helpful. Please send photos, too, if available!  Photos should contain people's names and location and any other helpful information.  This should become a fun, educational and informative piece of history that will continue to grow, and one that we're all building together! Thanks for your help!

Email your information to:
